Effect Of A Silicon Tip On Absorption Cross Section, Field Enhancement, And Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Of Different Sized Gold Nanoparticles Under Evanescent Wave Illumination, Gazi Mostafa Huda

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

We have numerically investigated the influence of a nanoscale silicon tip in proximity to an illuminated gold nanoparticle. We describe how the position of the high-permittivity tip and the size of a nanoparticle impact the absorption, peak electric field and surface plasmon resonance wavelength under different illumination conditions. We detail the finite element method (FEM) approach we have used for this, whereby we specify a volume excitation field analytically and calculate the difference between this source field and the total field (i.e., scattered-field formulation). We show that a nanoscale tip can locally enhance the absorption of the particle as well …

Rotate And Hold And Scan (Rahas): Structured Light Illumination For Use In Remote Areas, Eli Ross Crane

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

As a critical step after the discovery of material culture in the field, archaeologists have a need to document these findings with a slew of different physical measurements and photographs from varying perspectives. 3-D imaging is becoming increasingly popular as the primary documenting method to replace the plethora of tests and measurements, but for remote areas 3-D becomes more cumbersome due to physical and environmental constraints. The difficulty of using a 3-D imaging system in such environments is drastically lessened while using the RAHAS technique, since it acquires scans untethered to a computer. The goal of this thesis is to …

Compact Vision System For Monitoring Of 3d Weld Pool Surface In Pipe Welding, Alexander Phillip Maroudis Jan 2011

Compact Vision System For Monitoring Of 3d Weld Pool Surface In Pipe Welding, Alexander Phillip Maroudis

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Human welders have long been able to monitor a weld pool and adjust welding parameters accordingly. Automated welding robots can provide consistent movement during the welding process, but lack the ability to monitor the weld pool. A vision system attached to the welding robot could provide a way to monitor the weld pool substantially faster than a human being. Previous vision systems to monitor weld pool surfaces have been developed, but their uses are limited since the system is fixed in place. The compact vision system developed in this research attaches directly to the welding torch, which provides no limitations …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Peak Power Tracking Technologies For Solar Arrays On Small Spacecraft, Daniel Martin Erb Jan 2011

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Peak Power Tracking Technologies For Solar Arrays On Small Spacecraft, Daniel Martin Erb

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The unique environment of CubeSat and small satellite missions allows certain accepted paradigms of the larger satellite world to be investigated in order to trade performance for simplicity, mass, and volume. Peak Power Tracking technologies for solar arrays are generally implemented in order to meet the End-of-Life power requirements for satellite missions given radiation degradation over time. The short lifetime of the generic satellite mission removes the need to compensate for this degradation. While Peak Power Tracking implementations can give increased power by taking advantage and compensating for the temperature cycles that solar cells experience, this comes at the expense …

Spheroid Detection In 2d Images Using Circular Hough Transform, Priyanka Chaudhary

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Three-dimensional endothelial cell sprouting assay (3D-ECSA) exhibits differentiation of endothelial cells into sprouting structures inside a 3D matrix of collagen I. It is a screening tool to study endothelial cell behavior and identification of angiogenesis inhibitors. The shape and size of an EC spheroid (aggregation of ~ 750 cells) is important with respect to its growth performance in presence of angiogenic stimulators. Apparently, tubules formed on malformed spheroids lack homogeneity in terms of density and length. This requires segregation of well formed spheroids from malformed ones to obtain better performance metrics. We aim to develop and validate an automated imaging …

Issues Related To The Numerical Implementation Of A Sparse Method For The Solution Of Volume Integral Equations At Low Frequencies, Kiran Arcot

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Computational electromagnetic modeling involves generating system matrices by discretizing integral equations and solving the resulting system of linear equations. Many methods of solving the system of linear equations exist and one such method is the factorization of the matrix using the so called local-global solution (LOGOS) modes. Computer codes to perform the discretization of the integral equations, filling of the matrix, and the subsequent LOGOS factorization have previously been developed by others. However, these codes are limited to complex double precision arithmetic only.

This thesis extends and expands the existing computer by creating a more general implementation that is able …

Genetic Algorithm Controlled Common Subexpression Elimination For Spill-Free Register Allocation, Shashi Deepa Arcot Jan 2010

Genetic Algorithm Controlled Common Subexpression Elimination For Spill-Free Register Allocation, Shashi Deepa Arcot

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

As code complexity increases, maxlive increases. This is especially true in the case of the Kentucky If-Then-Else architecture proposed for Nanocontrollers. To achieve low circuit complexity, computations are decomposed to bit-level operations, thus generating large blocks of code with complex dependence structures. Additionally, the Nanocontroller architecture allows for only a small number of single bit registers and no extra memory.

The assumption of an infinite number of registers made during code generation becomes a huge problem during register allocation because the small number of registers and no additional memory. The large basic blocks mean that maxlive almost always exceeds the …

Commercialization And Optimization Of The Pixel Router, Steven James Dominick Jan 2010

Commercialization And Optimization Of The Pixel Router, Steven James Dominick

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The Pixel Router was developed at the University of Kentucky with the intent of supporting multi-projector displays by combining the scalability of commercial software solutions with the flexibility of commercial hardware solutions. This custom hardware solution uses a Look Up Table for an arbitrary input to output pixel mapping, but suffers from high memory latencies due to random SDRAM accesses. In order for this device to achieve marketability, the image interpolation method needed improvement as well. The previous design used the nearest neighbor interpolation method, which produces poor looking results but requires the least amount of memory accesses. A cache …

Gold Nanospheres And Gold Nanorods As Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors, Akil Mannan Matcheswala Jan 2010

Gold Nanospheres And Gold Nanorods As Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors, Akil Mannan Matcheswala

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

A novel localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor that differentiates between background refractive index changes and surface-binding of a target analyte (e.g. a target molecule, protein, or bacterium) is presented. Standard, single channel LSPR sensors cannot differentiate these two effects as their design allows only one mode to be coupled. This novel technique uses two surface plasmon modes to simultaneously measure surface binding and solution refractive index changes. This increases the sensitivity of the sensor.

Different channels or modes can be created in sensors with the introduction of gold nanospheres or gold nanorods that act as receptor mechanisms. Once immobilization …
