New Three-Phase Multilevel Inverter With Reduced Number Of Power Electronic Components, Saad Mekhilef Dec 2013

New Three-Phase Multilevel Inverter With Reduced Number Of Power Electronic Components, Saad Mekhilef

Saad Mekhilef

In this paper, a new configuration of a three-phase five-level multilevel voltage-source inverter is introduced. The proposed topology constitutes the conventional three-phase two-level bridge with three bidirectional switches. A multilevel dc link using fixed dc voltage supply and cascaded half-bridge is connected in such a way that the proposed inverter outputs the required output voltage levels. The fundamental frequency staircase modulation technique is easily used to generate the appropriate switching gate signals. For the purpose of increasing the number of voltage levels with fewer number of power electronic components, the structure of the proposed inverter is extended and different methods …

Work On A Software Defined Radio (Sdr) For A Cubesat-Class Spacecraft, Michael Wegerson, Jeremy Straub, Sima Noghanian

Jeremy Straub

A Software Defined Radio (SDR) will be used for OpenOrbit-er satellite to ground communications. The use of SDR al-lows for a smaller, more versatile radio then what a stand-ard hardware radio can provide; perfect for the unpredicta-ble environment Open Orbiter will be exposed to. Current implementation uses a simple $20 USB TV decoder for the receiver and the open-source program GNU Radio for soft-ware decoding. Broadband FM transmissions have been re-ceived and decoded successfully and on-going experimen-tation for receiving satellite communications are yielding promising results.

Simulation Of Z-Source Inverter Using Maximum Boost Control Pwm Technique, Suresh L Aug 2013

Simulation Of Z-Source Inverter Using Maximum Boost Control Pwm Technique, Suresh L

suresh L

Z – source inverters have been recently proposed as an alternative power conversion concept as they have both voltage buck and boost capabilities. These inverters use a unique impedance network, coupled between the power source and converter circuit, to provide both voltage buck and boost properties, which cannot be achieved with conventional voltage source and current source inverters. To facilitate understanding of Z – source inverter, this paper presents a detailed analysis, showing design of impedance network, implementation of Maximum Boost control (MBC) PWM technique and simulation of Z – source inverter.

Direct Power Control Of Dfigs Based Wind Energy Generation Systems Under Distorted Grid Voltage Conditions, Emad Gameil Shehata E. G. Shehata

Emad Gameil Shehata E. G. Shehata

This paper presents an improved direct power control (DPC) strategy of a wind turbine driven doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) connected to distorted grid voltage conditions. A coordinate control strategy of the grid side converter (GSC) and rotor side converter (RSC) of the DFIG is designed to improve the overall scheme performance. The RSC is controlled based on a DPC principle to eliminate the electromagnetic torque and stator reactive power oscillations. The total active and reactive power oscillations are compensated by the GSC control to achieve constant active and reactive powers from the overall DFIG system. A current control scheme …

Enabling Interplanetary Small Spacecraft Science Missions With Model Based Data Analysis, Jeremy Straub Jun 2013

Enabling Interplanetary Small Spacecraft Science Missions With Model Based Data Analysis, Jeremy Straub

Jeremy Straub

Small spacecraft operating outside of Earth orbit are significantly constrained by the communica- tions link available to them. This is particularly true for stand-alone craft that must rely on their own antenna and transmission systems (for which gain and available power generation are limited by form factor); it is also applicable to ‘hitchhiker’-style missions which may be able to utilize (quite likely very limited amounts of) time on the primary spacecraft’s communications equip- ment for long-haul transmission.

This poster presents the adaptation of the Model-Based Transmission Reduction (MBTR) frame- work’s Model-Based Data Analysis (MBDA) component for use on an interplanetary …

A 6-U Commercial Constellation For Space Solar Power Supply To Other Spacecraft, Corey Bergsrud, Jeremy Straub Apr 2013

A 6-U Commercial Constellation For Space Solar Power Supply To Other Spacecraft, Corey Bergsrud, Jeremy Straub

Jeremy Straub

This poster presents early stage planning for a constellation

of 6-U CubeSats which will collect power from

the sun and supply it to other spacecraft in Earth orbit. Unlike

solar panels (which have a known decay rate), antenna

systems (such as would be required to receive microwavetransmitted

power) do not substantially decay over the

typical (or prospectively extended, under this model)

spacecraft lifetime. This allows a spacecraft to be built for

long-term operations (utilizing an electric propulsion technology

and/or a greater supply of conventional propellant)

and receive power from a lower-cost utility provider

spacecraft, which can be replaced on a …

Direct Power Control Of Wind-Turbine-Driven Dfig During Transient Grid Voltage Unbalance, Emad Gameil Shehata E. G. Shehata Mar 2013

Direct Power Control Of Wind-Turbine-Driven Dfig During Transient Grid Voltage Unbalance, Emad Gameil Shehata E. G. Shehata

Emad Gameil Shehata E. G. Shehata

In this paper, a direct power control (DPC) of a wind-turbine-driven doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) under unbalanced network voltage conditions is studied. Variations of the stator output active, reactive and electromagnetic powers are fully deduced in the presence of negative sequence supply voltage. The rotor side converter is controlled on the basis of DPC to eliminate the electromagnetic torque oscillations at double supply frequency under unbalanced stator supply. The rotor voltage references estimation requires only simple calculations without any integral operation. The proposed control scheme removes rotor current regulators and the decomposition processing of positive and negative sequence rotor …

Cfp: Handbook Of Research On Technological Applications And Innovation For Economic Development, Deogratias Harorimana Mr

Dr Deogratias Harorimana

The innovation in the 21st century goes significantly beyond the high-tech picture driven by small or large industry clusters in a specific region-typically Silicon Valley and M4Corridor. The future of innovation will lie within knowledge management and seamless technological applications. These will be supported by planned funding strategies, possibly with clients as drivers of the innovation. This view seems to be supported by the UK government “Technology and Innovation Futures” (2011); the USA government (2011), study into which leading scholars concede that the future innovation and technological applications for economic growth will include products and processes, improvements in areas such …

A Human Proximity Operations System Test Case Validation Approach, Justin Huber, Jeremy Straub Mar 2013

A Human Proximity Operations System Test Case Validation Approach, Justin Huber, Jeremy Straub

Jeremy Straub

A Human Proximity Operations System (HPOS) poses numerous risks in a real world environment. These risks range from mundane tasks such as avoiding walls and fixed obstacles to the critical need to keep people and processes safe in the context of the HPOS’s situation-specific decision making. Validating the performance of an HPOS, which must operate in a real-world environment, is an ill posed problem due to the complexity that is introduced by erratic (non-computer) actors. In order to prove the HPOS’s usefulness, test cases must be generated to simulate possible actions of these actors, so the HPOS can be shown …

Novel Three-Phase Asymmetrical Cascaded Multilevel Voltage Source Inverter, Saad Mekhilef Feb 2013

Novel Three-Phase Asymmetrical Cascaded Multilevel Voltage Source Inverter, Saad Mekhilef

Saad Mekhilef

Series connection of power cells in asymmetrical cascaded configurations helps to cancel redundant output levels and maximise the number of different levels generated by the inverter. A new configuration of three-phase multilevel asymmetrical cascaded voltage source inverter is presented. This structure consists of series-connected sub-multilevel inverters blocks. The number of utilised switches, insulated gate driver circuits, voltage standing on switches, installation area and cost are considerably reduced. Cascaded-cell DC voltages in each inverter leg form an arithmetic sequence with common difference of E. With the selected inverter DC sources, high-frequency pulse-width modulation (PWM) control methods can be effectively applied without …

A Study Of Mexican Free-Tailed Bat Chirp Syllables: Bayesian Functional Mixed Modeling Of Nonstationary Time Series Data With Time-Dependent Spectra, Josue G. Martinez, Kirsten M. Bohn, Raymond J. Carroll, Jeffrey S. Morris Feb 2013

A Study Of Mexican Free-Tailed Bat Chirp Syllables: Bayesian Functional Mixed Modeling Of Nonstationary Time Series Data With Time-Dependent Spectra, Josue G. Martinez, Kirsten M. Bohn, Raymond J. Carroll, Jeffrey S. Morris

Jeffrey S. Morris

We describe a new approach to analyze chirp syllables of free-tailed bats from two regions of Texas in which they are predominant: Austin and College Station. Our goal is to characterize any systematic regional differences in the mating chirps and assess whether individual bats have signature chirps. The data are analyzed by modeling spectrograms of the chirps as responses in a Bayesian functional mixed model. Given the variable chirp lengths, we compute the spectrograms on a relative time scale interpretable as the relative chirp position, using a variable window overlap based on chirp length. We use 2D wavelet transforms to …

Horizontal And Vertical Rule Bases Method In Fuzzy Controllers, Sadegh Aminifar, Arjuna Bin Marzuki

Sadegh Aminifar

Concept of horizontal and vertical rule bases is introduced. Using this method enables the designers to look for main behaviors of

system and describes them with greater approximations. The rules which describe the system in first stage are called horizontal rule

base. In the second stage, the designermodulates the obtained surface by describing needed changes on first surface for handling real

behaviors of system. The rules used in the second stage are called vertical rule base. Horizontal and vertical rule basesmethod has a

great roll in easing of extracting the optimum control surface by using too lesser rules than traditional fuzzy …

REKIOUA Djamila Dr

This paper presents maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms for grid connected photovoltaic system. Due to the instantaneous changing of solar irradiance and temperature, it is desirable to determine the optimal voltage that ensures maximum energy yield. In order to optimize the photovoltaic energy generation, the MPPT is integrated in the inverter control. Perturb & Observ (P&O), Incremental Conductance (Inc Cond) techniques and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) are applied. A comparison shows the effectiveness of the FLC. The maximum power generated by the photovoltaic system is sent to the power grid to be consumed by the nearest customers. A constant …
