Inventing Around Edison’S Lamp Patent: The Role Of Patents In Stimulating Downstream Development And Competition, Ron D. Katznelson, John Howells

We provide the first detailed empirical study of inventing around patent claims. The enforcement of Edison’s incandescent lamp patent in 1891-1894 stimulated a surge of patenting. Most of these later patents disclosed inventions around the Edison patent. Some of these patents introduced important new technology in their own right and became prior art for new fields, indicating that invention around patents contributes to dynamic efficiency. Contrary to widespread contemporary understanding, the Edison lamp patent did not suppress technological advance in electric lighting. The market position of General Electric (“GE”), the Edison patent-owner, weakened through the period of this patent’s enforcement.

This paper reviews the algorithms used by Vector Signal Analyzers to measure Modulation Error Ratio (MER) and derives the explicit functional dependence of measured MER on phase noise of digital transmitters. The modulation error model is introduced and the analytical expression for key estimated parameters required to obtain MER measure are derived. The essential elements of algorithms employed by MER measurement instruments to estimate amplitude scale, frequency offset, and initial phase intercept and the resulting MER are identified. This submission provides support and explanations to the recommendation that specifications adopted for European applications of CableLabs’® Downstream RF Interface specifications (“DRFI”) should be maintained in accordance with the existing North American DRFI. It contains responses to a proposed changes offered by European proponents. This note addresses the in-channel (Active Output Channel) return loss requirements and the ‘Other Channels’ spurious and noise requirements.

This submission supported Broadband Innovations' (BI) opposition to relaxing the Out-of-Band Noise and Spurious specifications in QAM downstream transmission of Edge-QAM (“EQAM”) devices. The specifications relaxation was proposed by a consortium of equipment vendors who called it the Joint Proposal for Self-Aggregate noise and spurious (“JPSA”). This note explains why the adoption of the JPSA would strip CATV systems from having sufficient operational noise and interference margins.

Post submission note: Despite the overwhelming majority of the Working Group's acceptance and recommendation of the JPSA, CableLabs' Technical Board voted to accept BI's proposal and to reject the JPSA.

This note addresses the impact of broadband return loss of frequency agile modulators when combined through headend combining networks. In particular, the effect of less-than-ideal output return loss values are examined and it is shown that even under the worst case conditions, a broadband return loss of 10 dB produces only small reductions in isolation that still permit cable operators to meet their headend combining specifications.

This paper discusses the practical limitations and the subtle assumptions that must be incorporated into the specifications and measurements of Aggregate Broadband Noise of CATV upconverters and digital QAM transmitters. Considerations that govern the accuracy and measurement dynamic range required for such Aggregate Broadband Noise measures are identified. Novel methods involving the separation of the Aggregate Broadband Noise measure into its composites, namely, modulated distortion noise components and other broadband noise components are discussed. The statistical properties of Composite Triple Beat (CTB) and Composite Second Order (CSO) distortion terms associated with the analog channels carried on Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) are presented. Both simulation and measurement results show that such distortion components falling on individual channels have amplitude Probability Density Function that is nearly Rayleigh distributed (having a Standard Deviation of 5.7 dB). It is shown that both CTB and CSO components have peak envelope power fluctuations that exceed their average (measured) power levels by more than 15 dB.
