Numerical Studies And Optimization Of Magnetron With Diffraction Output (Mdo) Using Particle-In-Cell Simulations, Alireza Majzoobi Oct 2015

Numerical Studies And Optimization Of Magnetron With Diffraction Output (Mdo) Using Particle-In-Cell Simulations, Alireza Majzoobi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The first magnetron as a vacuum-tube device, capable of generating microwaves, was invented in 1913. This thesis research focuses on numerical simulation-based analysis of magnetron performance. The particle-in-cell (PIC) based MAGIC software tool has been utilized to study the A6 and the Rising-Sun magnetron structures, and to obtain the optimized geometry for optimizing the device performance. The A6 magnetron is the more traditional structure and has been studied more often. The Rising-Sun geometry, consists of two alternating groups of short and long vanes in angular orientation, and was created to achieve mode stability.

The effect of endcaps, changes in lengths …

A Vector Channel Based Approach To Mimo Radar Waveform Design For Extended Targets, Amanda Joan Angell Daniel Jul 2015

A Vector Channel Based Approach To Mimo Radar Waveform Design For Extended Targets, Amanda Joan Angell Daniel

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Radar systems have been used for many years for estimating, detecting, classifying, and imaging objects of interest (targets). Stealthier targets and more cluttered environments have created a need for more sophisticated radar systems to gain more precise information about the radar environment. Because modern radar systems are largely defined in software, adaptive radar systems have emerged that tailor system parameters such as the transmitted waveform and receiver filter to the target and environment in order to address this need.

The basic structure of a radar system exhibits many similarities to the structure of a communication system. Recognizing the parallel composition …

High Efficiency Ultrathin Cigs Solar Cells, Krishna Prasad Aryal Jul 2015

High Efficiency Ultrathin Cigs Solar Cells, Krishna Prasad Aryal

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The global demand for renewable energy is growing rapidly. Increasing the global share of alternative sources of energy would not only bring environmental benefits, but also enhance overall energy security by diversifying energy supply. Many technology options exist nowadays to harvest the power of the sun, a sustainable energy source, and generate electricity directly from this source via the photovoltaic effect. Among them, Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) has gained significant momentum as a possible high efficiency and low cost thin film solar cell material. The capacity to scale up any photovoltaic technology is one of the criteria that will determine its …

Characterization And Decoding Of Speech Representations From The Electrocorticogram, Shreya Chakrabarti Jul 2015

Characterization And Decoding Of Speech Representations From The Electrocorticogram, Shreya Chakrabarti

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Millions of people worldwide suffer from various neuromuscular disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), brainstem stroke, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and others, which adversely affect the neural control of muscles or the muscles themselves. The patients who are the most severely affected lose all voluntary muscle control and are completely locked-in," i.e., they are unable to communicate with the outside world in any manner. In the direction of developing neuro-rehabilitation techniques for these patients, several studies have used brain signals related to mental imagery and attention in order to control an external device, a technology known as a brain-computer …

Improving Engagement Assessment By Model Individualization And Deep Learning, Feng Li Jul 2015

Improving Engagement Assessment By Model Individualization And Deep Learning, Feng Li

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation studies methods that improve engagement assessment for pilots. The major work addresses two challenging problems involved in the assessment: individual variation among pilots and the lack of labeled data for training assessment models.

Task engagement is usually assessed by analyzing physiological measurements collected from subjects who are performing a task. However, physiological measurements such as Electroencephalography (EEG) vary from subject to subject. An assessment model trained for one subject may not be applicable to other subjects. We proposed a dynamic classifier selection algorithm for model individualization and compared it to other two methods: base line normalization and similarity-based …

Isogeometric Analysis For Electromagnetism, Tahsin Khajah Apr 2015

Isogeometric Analysis For Electromagnetism, Tahsin Khajah

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The combination of numerical analysis with the scanning technology has been seeing increased use in many research areas. There is an emerging need for high-fidelity geometric modeling and meshing for practical applications. The Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) is a comprehensive computational framework, which integrates geometric modeling and meshing with analysis. Different from other existing numerical methods, the IGA can generate analysis ready models without loss of geometrical accuracy. In IGA, the continuity and the quality of a solution can be conveniently controlled and refined. These features enable IGA to integrate modeling, analysis, and design in a unified framework, the root idea …

Development Of Superconducting Spoke Cavities For High-Velocity Applications, Christopher Shawn Hopper Apr 2015

Development Of Superconducting Spoke Cavities For High-Velocity Applications, Christopher Shawn Hopper

Physics Theses & Dissertations

To date, superconducting spoke cavities have been designed, developed, and tested for particle velocities up to β0 ~ 0.6, but there is a growing interest in possible applications of spoke cavities for high-velocity applications. The first task is to explore the design parameter space for low-frequency, high-velocity, single- and double-spoke superconducting cavities in order to determine how each design parameter affects the electromagnetic properties, in particular the surface electromagnetic fields and the shunt impedance. Once an electromagnetically optimized, high-velocity spoke cavity is designed, there are several other characteristics that need to be investigated. These include multipacting scenarios, higher-order mode excitation …

Multi-Surface Simplex Spine Segmentation For Spine Surgery Simulation And Planning, Rabia Haq Jan 2015

Multi-Surface Simplex Spine Segmentation For Spine Surgery Simulation And Planning, Rabia Haq

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This research proposes to develop a knowledge-based multi-surface simplex deformable model for segmentation of healthy as well as pathological lumbar spine data. It aims to provide a more accurate and robust segmentation scheme for identification of intervertebral disc pathologies to assist with spine surgery planning. A robust technique that combines multi-surface and shape statistics-aware variants of the deformable simplex model is presented. Statistical shape variation within the dataset has been captured by application of principal component analysis and incorporated during the segmentation process to refine results. In the case where shape statistics hinder detection of the pathological region, user-assistance is …
