Increased Cyclist Safety Using An Embedded System, Matthew Ryan Heydorn

In order to reduce bicycle-vehicle collisions, we design and implement a cost effectiveembedded system to warn cyclists of approaching vehicles. The system uses an Odroid C2 singleboard computer (SBC) to do vehicle and lane detection in real time using only vision. The system warns cyclist are warned of approaching cars using both a smartphone app and an LED indicator. Due to the limited performance of the Odroid C2 and other low power and low cost SBCs,we found that existing detection algorithms run either too slowly or do not have sufficient accuracy to be practical. Capillary electrophoresis laser-induced fluorescence (CE-LIF) is widely used to detect both the presence and concentration of fluorescently labeled biomolecules. In CE-LIF, a plug of sample fluid is electrophoretically driven down a microchannel using a high voltage applied between the opposite ends of the microchannel. Molecules of different sizes and charge states travel at different velocities down the channel. Laser light with a wavelength in the excitation band of the fluorophores is focused near the end of the channel. Micro-unmanned aerial rotorcraft are quickly gaining acceptance as indoor platforms for performing stealth, surveillance, and rescue and reconnaissance missions. These rotorcraft are generally required to operate in cluttered, unknown, and dynamic GPS-denied environments, which present threats to the safe operation of the vehicle. To overcome these environmental challenges, we describe a system that is capable of localizing itself by producing accurate odometry estimates that can detect and track moving objects and avoid collisions with obstacles while following a moving target using a laser range finder. In this dissertation it is shown that the telemetry versions of Feher-patented QPSK (FQPSK-JR) and shaped offset QPSK (SOQPSK-TG) can be interpreted as both cross-correlated, trellis-coded quadrature modulation (XTCQM) and continuous phase modulation (CPM). Based on these representations, both modulations can be detected with near optimal bit error rate performance using a common detector that is formulated as either an XTCQM detector, a traditional CPM detector, or a pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) detector (due to the PAM decomposition of the CPM representations of these modulations). This dissertation presents an innovative solid-state current amplifier based on impact-ionization. Unlike avalanche photodetectors which use the same amplification principle, this device can be integrated with any external current source. A discrete amplifier was built on a silicon surface using standard CMOS fabrication processes including lithography, oxidation, ion implantation, diffusion, chemical wet etching, metal deposition, annealing, and rapid thermal processing. Testing was performed by connecting the device to a silicon photodiode, indium-gallium-arsenide photodiodes, and a function generator to demonstrate its compatibility with arbitrary current sources. Current gains above 100 along with pre-amplified leakage currents of less than 10 nA were …
