Enviromentally Conscious Industrial Renewable Energy Storage Design, Kouroush Jenab, Travis C. Porter Oct 2019

Enviromentally Conscious Industrial Renewable Energy Storage Design, Kouroush Jenab, Travis C. Porter

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The storage of energy on an industrial scale is the biggest obstacle we face regarding renewable energy sources; which, until the past decade has been at a miniscule scale. Since 2012, the capability and emphasis on finding solutions to this problem have grown exponentially, fueled by a spike in technology advancements. This has led to a growth of over fifteen hundred percent in scalable renewable energy storage, globally. Finding an easily scalable solution to industrial scale renewable energy storage is an important issue that needs to be addressed to mitigate the effect on our environment. This would be a massive …

Interchangeable All Fiber-Based Passive Voa/Voc System, Andrei Statchevschi Jul 2019

Interchangeable All Fiber-Based Passive Voa/Voc System, Andrei Statchevschi

Publications and Research

A passive interchangeable variable optical coupler and attenuator system is demonstrated. A maximum coupling ratio of 99.94/0.06 and attenuation of up to 30 dB were achieved respectively.

Autonomous Watercraft Simulation And Programming, Nicholas J. Savino Apr 2019

Autonomous Watercraft Simulation And Programming, Nicholas J. Savino

Student Scholar Showcase

Automation of various modes of transportation is thought to make travel more safe and efficient. Over the past several decades, advances to semi-autonomous and autonomous vehicles have led to advanced autopilot systems on planes and boats, and an increasing popularity of self-driving cars. We predicted the motion of an autonomous vehicle using simulations in Python. The simulation models the motion of a small scale watercraft, which can then be built and programmed using an Arduino Microcontroller. We examined different control methods for a simulated rescue craft to reach a target. We also examined the effects of different factors, such as …

Generating Spectra Using Pca-Based Spectral Mixture Models, Joseph S. Makarewicz, Heather D. Makarewicz Apr 2019

Generating Spectra Using Pca-Based Spectral Mixture Models, Joseph S. Makarewicz, Heather D. Makarewicz

Scholar Week 2016 - present

PCA-based spectra mixture models have been created for several laboratory mixture data sets. This presentation provides examples of spectra that were generated using PCA-based spectra mixture models.

An Electrooculography Prosthetic Control System, Walker Arce Mar 2019

An Electrooculography Prosthetic Control System, Walker Arce

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

For many surface EMG (sEMG) prosthetic control systems, the muscles on the affected limb are used to trigger the control system. This can lead to fatigue in the user as they have to maintain continuous muscle activation and coactivation in order to achieve prosthetic control [3]. The crux of any prosthetic control system is the human machine interface that is developed, and at present many control systems have complicated interfaces that limit the degrees of freedom of the prosthetics. This study focuses on the development of a low-cost prosthetic control peripheral that is compatible with the prosthetics developed by Dr. …

A Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) Prosthetic Control System, Andrew Butler Mar 2019

A Radio Frequency Identification (Rfid) Prosthetic Control System, Andrew Butler

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Item classification and tagging in embedded systems has become ubiquitous in our society due to radio frequency identification (RFID) and the cost has dropped significantly for hardware that can interact with these devices. Due to this, possibilities in the realm of prosthetic control systems opens up for dynamic grip selection without user intervention. This study focuses on the development of a device capable of this functionality that is compatible with the prosthetics designed by Dr. Zuniga and his research team.

The printed circuit board (PCB) was designed using the EAGLE EDA package and incorporates a lithium polymer battery with a …
