Skip The Grid: Restoring Light To The Navajo Nation, Diego Isaias Gonzalez

Construction Management

Skip the Grid is an interdisciplinary service project through California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) where students and faculty partnered with sponsors including SOLV Energy and Goal Zero, and facilitation by Heart of America, an educational equity non-profit, to bring solar power to 27 families of school aged children in the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation is a historically disadvantaged community which lacks the infrastructure and financial capacity to provide electrical service to about a third of the families living on the reservation. Families in the Red Mesa and Chinle School Districts were the focus for this …

Can The In-House Installation Of Solar Panels Increase Residential Builder’S Profits?, Garrison M. O'Marr Jun 2022

Can The In-House Installation Of Solar Panels Increase Residential Builder’S Profits?, Garrison M. O'Marr

Construction Management

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and determine if the In-house installation of solar panels by Residential Builders will lead to increased profits. Specifically, this pertains to Large Residential Developers that are focused on building single-family home developments with greater than 25 homes. With the demand for solar power in new homes continuously rising year after year, it is smart to find more profitable ways to install these systems, one of which is self-installation performed by the General Contractor. The Methodology of research I used is a combination of primary and secondary research, as well as interviews with …

Skip The Grid: Giving Power To Navajo Nation, Ryan J. Schacherbauer Jun 2022

Skip The Grid: Giving Power To Navajo Nation, Ryan J. Schacherbauer

Construction Management

Skip the Grid is a project organized by Heart of America, a nonprofit, looking to improve the education and overall wellbeing of children and their families. Many residents within Navajo Nation do not have access to continuous power and rely on temporary generators or car battery to obtain any kind of electricity. Heart of America partnered with the Red Mesa School District to identify families that did not have power, which was impacting the children’s ability to complete their online schoolwork. This senior project was comprised of an interdisciplinary team responsible for installing a working solar system on twelve homes …

Living Off The Grid With Renewable Energy: A Case Study, Jake Reid O'Balle Mar 2022

Living Off The Grid With Renewable Energy: A Case Study, Jake Reid O'Balle

Construction Management

The trend towards green, sustainable living is on the rise and the benefits are continuing to make noise in the world of homeowners. In this project, the benefits of renewable energy and consumer preferences were analyzed and applied to off-grid living in the form of a case study. It was found that the majority of homebuyers are concerned about the environment and wanted an environmentally friendly home but are not willing to pay more in order to achieve these desires. This information spurred the need for a detailed assessment of the feasibility of sustainable off-grid living. After conducting extensive research, …

Net-Zero Homes, The Homes Of The Future, Primo Guseppi Facchini Mar 2021

Net-Zero Homes, The Homes Of The Future, Primo Guseppi Facchini

Construction Management

Net-Zero homes are the homes of the future (Holmes, 2018). What makes Net-zero homes unique is they rely on solar power, opposed to all standard housing that relies on the power grid. These homes use solar instead of other forms of energy generating technology because it is more affordable and better for the environment. California has blazed the trail for the rest of the United States and the world to follow with their Net-Zero housing proposition. Starting January 2020 California will require all residential buildings to be net-zero homes. Net-Zero homes are important because it is no secret that our …

Proposal For A New Construction Management Emerging Trends Elective Course: Principles Of Solar Construction, Nicholas J. Gairaud Jun 2020

Proposal For A New Construction Management Emerging Trends Elective Course: Principles Of Solar Construction, Nicholas J. Gairaud

Construction Management

California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) prides itself on its learn by doing motto which encourages students to participate in hands-on projects and choose elective courses about topics they are interested in. This project is an outline for an Emerging Trends elective course that aims to fill the gap between what students learn in school and what they see in the field. Over the past decade, the use of on-site solar energy generated has skyrocketed in the commercial and residential sectors. The purpose of this course is to inform students about solar requirements and to lay the groundwork for students …

Neca Ghana Project, Michael T. Klee Mar 2020

Neca Ghana Project, Michael T. Klee

Construction Management

Cal Poly’s motto is, “Learn by Doing" and for Cal Poly’s NECA Chapter, this isn’t simply a motto, but a directive for proactive change. For my senior project I will be leading the Cal Poly NECA chapter in the design, pre- fabrication and construction of a 5-7kw solar array, community center, ice production room and technology room in the remote fishing village of Agbokpa, Ghana. The solar array will power multiple industrial DC freezers, high efficiency LED lighting and charging stations while additionally powering water filtration and irrigation systems. Like many other fishing villages around the world, Agbokpa has no …

Logistics Of Construction In Agbokpa, Ghana, Fletcher David Podosek Jun 2019

Logistics Of Construction In Agbokpa, Ghana, Fletcher David Podosek

Construction Management

In August of 2019, three Cal Poly CM students will travel to the remote fishing village of Agbokpa in Ghana. Our project is to install a water filtration system that will create potable water for the villagers that currently have to walk miles to obtain clean water. We will be laying nearly 1000 ft of pipe, installing a solar powered pump, and building a water filtration system hours away from any electricity. A project of this type requires a great deal of logistical planning in order to ensure that all aspects of the project is thought of and planned for. …

Solar Shingle Experience: Evaluating Their Value In Today's Market, Kevin R. Church Jun 2019

Solar Shingle Experience: Evaluating Their Value In Today's Market, Kevin R. Church

Solar technology has been on the rise in popularity in recent years and we are starting to see more of it across the US. As the technology and capabilities of photovoltaic (PV) cells advance, there has been an increase in the number of different product designs that incorporate PV cells. Building integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) products have been some of the most popular introduced to the market. In the last five years, one of these BIPV products, a solar system integrated into the roofing shingles of residential homes has been sensationalized and, according to a California solar installer, that has encouraged …

Viability Of Solar Power On Jobsites, Braden J. Levalley Jun 2019

Viability Of Solar Power On Jobsites, Braden J. Levalley

Construction Management

The use of solar energy has slowly been on the rise over the past few decades, the full potential of solar energy has not been realized in the realm of construction. Solar power in construction has been slow to catch on, as many of the upfront costs associated with solar power has created a feeling that investing in such systems will ultimately not be worth the investment. This paper attempts to address the issues of upfront costs, the willingness for contractors to invest in renewable energy both now and in the future, and will also identify possible uses for solar …

Photovoltaic Installation In Ecuador And The Amazon, David Mulder Dec 2016

Photovoltaic Installation In Ecuador And The Amazon, David Mulder

Construction Management

The Photovoltaic Installation in Ecuador and The Amazon is part of a collaborative effort between two major construction clubs at Cal Poly: NECA and MCAA. Four students, two from each club, traveled with two faculty to install photovoltaics for two different communities. The first project was a solar installation to provide fresh water for the community of Santa Rosa. Project number two, was a sixteen-panel installation in Shell, Ecuador for the non-profit Reach Beyond. The main goals of each project were to provide fresh water, and achieve net zero electrical consumption.
