Transiency-Driven Resource Management For Cloud Computing Platforms, Prateek Sharma
Transiency-Driven Resource Management For Cloud Computing Platforms, Prateek Sharma
Doctoral Dissertations
Modern distributed server applications are hosted on enterprise or cloud data centers that provide computing, storage, and networking capabilities to these applications. These applications are built using the implicit assumption that the underlying servers will be stable and normally available, barring for occasional faults. In many emerging scenarios, however, data centers and clouds only provide transient, rather than continuous, availability of their servers. Transiency in modern distributed systems arises in many contexts, such as green data centers powered using renewable intermittent sources, and cloud platforms that provide lower-cost transient servers which can be unilaterally revoked by the cloud operator. Transient …

Machs: Mitigating The Achilles Heel Of The Cloud Through High Availability And Performance-Aware Solutions, Manar Jammal
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Cloud computing is continuously growing as a business model for hosting information and communication technology applications. However, many concerns arise regarding the quality of service (QoS) offered by the cloud. One major challenge is the high availability (HA) of cloud-based applications. The key to achieving availability requirements is to develop an approach that is immune to cloud failures while minimizing the service level agreement (SLA) violations. To this end, this thesis addresses the HA of cloud-based applications from different perspectives. First, the thesis proposes a component’s HA-ware scheduler (CHASE) to manage the deployments of carrier-grade cloud applications while maximizing their …

Fog Computing With Go: A Comparative Study, Ellis H. Butterfield
CMC Senior Theses
The Internet of Things is a recent computing paradigm, de- fined by networks of highly connected things – sensors, actuators and smart objects – communicating across networks of homes, buildings, vehicles, and even people. The Internet of Things brings with it a host of new problems, from managing security on constrained devices to processing never before seen amounts of data. While cloud computing might be able to keep up with current data processing and computational demands, it is unclear whether it can be extended to the requirements brought forth by Internet of Things.
Fog computing provides an architectural solution to …
Decafs: A Modular Distributed File System To Facilitate Distributed Systems Education, Halli Elaine Meth
Decafs: A Modular Distributed File System To Facilitate Distributed Systems Education, Halli Elaine Meth
Master's Theses
Data quantity, speed requirements, reliability constraints, and other factors encourage industry developers to build distributed systems and use distributed services. Software engineers are therefore exposed to distributed systems and services daily in the workplace. However, distributed computing is hard to teach in Computer Science courses due to the complexity distribution brings to all problem spaces. This presents a gap in education where students may not fully understand the challenges introduced with distributed systems. Teaching students distributed concepts would help better prepare them for industry development work.
DecaFS, Distributed Educational Component Adaptable File System, is a modular distributed file system designed …

Cuda Web Api Remote Execution Of Cuda Kernels Using Web Services, Massimo J. Becker
Master's Theses
Massively parallel programming is an increasingly growing field with the recent introduction of general purpose GPU computing. Modern graphics processors from NVIDIA and AMD have massively parallel architectures that can be used for such applications as 3D rendering, financial analysis, physics simulations, and biomedical analysis. These massively parallel systems are exposed to programmers through in- terfaces such as NVIDIAs CUDA, OpenCL, and Microsofts C++ AMP. These frame- works expose functionality using primarily either C or C++. In order to use these massively parallel frameworks, programs being implemented must be run on machines equipped with massively parallel hardware. These requirements limit …
