Simulation Of Locating Buried Objects Via Fringe Pattern-Based Measurements In An Optical Fiber Sensor-Integrated Continuous-Wave Ground-Penetrating Radar System, Asaf Behzat Şahi̇n, Hati̇ce Gonca Bulur

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new ground-penetrating radar system that can determine the depth and position of a buried metal cylinder, which is the combination of an optical fiber sensor (OFS), continuous-wave transmitter, and optical communication link, is proposed and simulated in the MATLAB and Optiwave program packages. Employing an optical sensor instead of a standard radio frequency (RF) receiver offers the advantage of preventing electromagnetic interference along the sensor's main unit cable and lower amplification noise. In this paper, the electric field distribution at the OFS due to reflections from the soil surface and the buried object is obtained mathematically using Green's function. …

Emg Classification In Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome And Periodic Limb Movement Syndrome Patients By Using Wavelet Packet Transform And Extreme Learning Machine, Necmetti̇n Sezgi̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Electromyogram (EMG) signals, measured at the skin surface, provide crucial access to the muscle tones of a body. Some diseases, such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and periodic limb movement syndrome (PLMS), are closely associated with the electrical activity of muscle tones. In this paper, a hybrid model containing wavelet packet transform (WPT) plus an extreme learning machine (ELM) was proposed to classify EMG signals in OSAS and PLMS patients. At first, the WPT was used to extract the features of the EMG signal, and then these features were fed to the ELM classifier. The mean classification accuracy of …

Superior Decoupled Control Of Active And Reactive Power For Three-Phase Voltage Source Converters, Hesam Rahbarimagham, Erfan Maali Amiri, Behrooz Vahidi, Gevorg Babamalek Gharehpetian, Mehrdad Abedi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents an active-reactive power control strategy for voltage source converters (VSCs) based on derivation of the direct and quadrature components of the VSC output current. The proposed method utilizes a multivariable proportional-integral controller and provides almost completely decoupled control capability of the active and reactive power with almost full disturbance rejection due to step changes in the power exchanged between the VSC and the grid. It also imposes fast transient response and zero steady-state error as compared to the conventional power control approaches. The applicability of the proposed power control strategy for providing the robust stability of the …

New Metrics For Clustering Of Identical Products Over Imperfect Data, Zeki̇ Yetgi̇n, Furkan Gözükara Jan 2015

New Metrics For Clustering Of Identical Products Over Imperfect Data, Zeki̇ Yetgi̇n, Furkan Gözükara

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces the concept of product identity-clustering based on new similarity metrics and new performance metrics for web-crawled products. Product identity-clustering is defined here as the clustering of identical products, e.g., for price comparison purposes. Products blindly crawled over web sources, e.g., online marketplaces, have different description formats, where the features describing the same products differ in both number and representation formats. This problem causes imperfect feature vectors, where the vectors are considered to be not uniform in length and structure, with the features of various data types (numeric, categorical), and unknown vector structures. Furthermore, the product information usually …

Effective Cooperative Dtv Detection Using The Goertzel Algorithm, Selman Kulaç, Murat Hüsnü Sazli

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In digital TV (DTV) detection, to monitor the DTV spectrum, only pilot tone frequency values can be observed in order to achieve calculation and energy savings. These savings can be achieved using the Goertzel algorithm. However, more than one receiver sensor is needed in order to increase the detection quality. In this technique, the Goertzel algorithm is used for energy-efficient pilot tone detection and a new effective cooperative structure is proposed. There is no extra fusion center and more than one DTV band can be monitored with this OR rule-based cooperative structure. With this new cooperative structure, reaching the desired …

Optimal Integration Of Hybrid (Wind--Solar) System With Diesel Power Plant \Newline Using Homer, Muhammad Noman Siddique, Aftab Ahmad, Muhammad Kashif Nawaz, Syed Basit Ali Bukhari

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Most energy worldwide is supplied through conventional energy sources, such as thermal, hydro, and nuclear. There have been serious energy crises in the last couple of years and so it is essential to consider renewable energy sources. This paper proposes a cost-effective solution for integrating a wind--solar system with an existing diesel power plant of a grid-connected site at Taxila, Pakistan. In the case of nonavailability of power from the grid, this diesel power plant acts as a standby system. Three cases were considered in this paper: 1) using the diesel power plant during load-shedding hours; 2) assisting the system …

Frequency-Adaptive Grid-Virtual-Flux Synchronization By Multiple Second-Order Generalized Integrators Under Distorted Grid Conditions, Yingjie Wang, Haiyuan Liu, Xuelong Han, Kangan Wang

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

With some of the intermittent new energy and large nonlinear loads, grid voltage unbalance, harmonics, and frequency deviation are increasing year by year. The voltage source converter (VSC) is seriously affected by the various unexpected factors, and the presence of grid impedance makes the situation worse. In order to make the VSC track the nonideal grid quickly and accurately, this paper proposes a frequency-adaptive grid-virtual-flux synchronization by multiple second-order generalized integrators (MSOGI-GVFS). Key expressions of the MSOGI-GVFS and its frequency response characteristics are described in this paper. A second-order generalized integrator configured as a quadrature signal generator generates a specific-frequency …

Automatic Vehicle Classification Using Fast Neural Network And Classical Neural Network For Traffic Monitoring, Mahammad Abdul Hannan, Chew Teik Gee, Mohammad Saleh Javadi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces an automatic vehicle classification for traffic monitoring using image processing. In this technique the fast neural network (FNN) as a primary classifier and then the classical neural network (CNN) as a final classifier are applied to achieve high classification performance. The FNN gains a useful correlation between the input and the weighted neurons using a multilayer perceptron to provide detection with a high level of accuracy. The Fourier transform is used to speed up the procedure. In the CNN, a lighting normalization method is employed to reduce the effect of variations in illumination. The combination of the …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The development of an American Sign Language (ASL) word recognition system based on neural networks and a probabilistic model is presented. We use a CyberGlove and a Flock of Birds motion tracker to extract the gesture data. The finger joint angle data obtained from the sensory glove defines the handshape while the data from the motion tracker describes the trajectory of the hand movement. The four gesture features, namely handshape, hand position, hand orientation, and hand movement, are recognized using different functions that include backpropagation neural networks. The sequence of these features is used to generate a specific sign or …

Demand Response In The Day-Ahead Operation Of An Isolated Microgrid In The Presence Of Uncertainty Of Wind Power, Javad Olamaei, Saleh Ashouri

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper explores the utilization of demand response in the day-ahead operation of an isolated microgrid in the presence of wind units. The operation of the network with high penetration wind units (i.e. uncertainty of wind units) is modeled as a unit commitment problem. In addition, electrical power storage is modeled in a daily power curve to decrease the effect of uncertainty in the wind units. Due to avoiding large-scale complexities and the deeper study effect of demand-side management on operations, the considered network is regarded as an isolated microgrid. The demand-side management is studied as demand shifting. The simulation …

Regulation Of Methane Gas Output From An Anaerobic Reactor System Using Moving Horizon $H_{\Infty }$ Control, Fatma Yildiz Taşcikaraoğlu, Şeref Naci̇ Engi̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, the moving horizon $\mathcal{H}_{\infty }$\textbf{ }control used for tracking a desired methane gas output from an anaerobic wastewater treatment reactor is compared with classical $\mathcal{H}_{\infty }$ control and a proportional-integral-derivative controller. The nonlinear system is first linearized around the set of equilibrium and operating points selected, and then the linear matrix inequalities required to comply with the constraints and guarantee the stability are constructed. Finally, the experimental results are obtained by implementing the control method in a MATLAB environment. It is concluded that moving horizon $\mathcal{H}_{\infty }$ control yields satisfactory results.

Capacitive Sensor Supporting Multiple Touch Switches Using A Resistor String, Kwangsu Seong Jan 2015

Capacitive Sensor Supporting Multiple Touch Switches Using A Resistor String, Kwangsu Seong

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In a low-cost integrated circuit (IC) chip, the packaging cost is a considerable portion of the total manufacturing cost of the chip. As the packaging cost is directly related to the total number of I/O pins, it is highly desirable to minimize the number of I/O pins while maintaining the same functionality. We propose a capacitive sensor that supports multiple touch switches with only two IC pins. The electrode plates of the touch switches are placed at the ends of a resistor string and between every two adjacent resistors in the resistor string. The proposed method measures rise times at …

Improving The Drain-Current Expression Of Bsim4 For Hot-Carrier Degradation Modeling That Is Suitable For Analog Applications, Gürsel Düzenli̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The reliability evaluation of MOS transistors is one of the most important subjects in device engineering and VLSI design. The down-scaling of device dimensions adversely affects device reliability and lifetime. Although different factors contribute to device reliability and lifetime, the most influential factor is hot-carrier degradation. Furthermore, hot-carrier degradation affects each application uniquely. In analog applications, hot-carrier degradation is more complex and diverse relative to digital applications. In this study, we improve the BSIM4 drain-current model to develop a hot-carrier degradation model that is suitable for both analog and digital applications. Our approach is readily applicable to all process technologies …

Multilevel Hybrid Cascade-Stack Inverter With Substantial Reduction In Switches Number And Power Losses, Mahdi Toopchi Khosroshahi, Ali Ajami, Ata Ollah Mokhberdoran, Mohammadreza Jannati Oskuee

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes a multilevel hybrid cascade-stack (HCS) converter. Recently, different new topologies for cascade-type converters have been suggested with the goal of reducing switch number, loss, switch PIV, etc. Meanwhile, output voltage steps increase, and the number of switches is predominately reduced in the suggested inverter in comparison to conventional cascade converters. Additionally, a reduction in the number of on-state switches in the introduced topology causes power loss and voltage drop to decrease. Firstly, the fundamental parts of inverter configuration are described. Afterwards, symmetric and asymmetric converter types are discussed. Simulation and experimental results for 11- and 23-level symmetric …

A Hierarchic Approach Based On Swarm Intelligence To Solve The Traveling Salesman Problem, Mesut Gündüz, Mustafa Servet Kiran, Eren Özceylan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The purpose of this paper is to present a new hierarchic method based on swarm intelligence algorithms for solving the well-known traveling salesman problem. The swarm intelligence algorithms implemented in this study are divided into 2 types: path construction-based and path improvement-based methods. The path construction-based method (ant colony optimization (ACO)) produces good solutions but takes more time to achieve a good solution, while the path improvement-based technique (artificial bee colony (ABC)) quickly produces results but does not achieve a good solution in a reasonable time. Therefore, a new hierarchic method, which consists of both ACO and ABC, is proposed …

Automatic Classification Of Harmonic Data Using $K$-Means And Least Square Support Vector Machine, Hüseyi̇n Eri̇şti̇, Vedat Tümen, Özal Yildirim, Belkis Eri̇şti̇, Yakup Demi̇r

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, an effective classification approach to classify harmonic data has been proposed. In the proposed classifier approach, harmonic data obtained through a 3-phase system have been classified by using $k$-means and least square support vector machine (LS-SVM) models. In order to obtain class details regarding harmonic data, a $k$-means clustering algorithm has been applied to these data first. The training of the LS-SVM model has been realized with the class details obtained through the $k$-means algorithm. To increase the efficiency of the LS-SVM model, the regularization and kernel parameters of this model have been determined with a grid …

Low-Cost Sliding Mode Control Of Wecs Based On Dfig With Stability Analysis, Abdelhak Djoudi, Hachemi Chekireb, El Madjid Berkouk, Seddik Bacha

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The aim of this work is to developing sliding mode control of active and reactive stator powers produced by a wind energy conversion system (WECS), based on doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). A flux estimation model and rotor current sensor are no longer required. The controller is developed from the DFIG nonlinear-coupled model. Moreover, the global stability and the DFIG states' boundedness when our low-cost sliding mode control is applied are established analytically. It is revealed that the $(dq)$ components of the rotor flux remain near their nominal values. Our approach is validated via simulation in the case of a …

The Integrated Control Of Fuzzy Logic And Model-Based Approach For Variable-Speed Wind Turbine, Jian Yang, Dongran Song, Hua Han, Pengsha Tong, Ling Zhou Jan 2015

The Integrated Control Of Fuzzy Logic And Model-Based Approach For Variable-Speed Wind Turbine, Jian Yang, Dongran Song, Hua Han, Pengsha Tong, Ling Zhou

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

For a variable-speed wind turbine (VSWT), the primary objective of control is to maximize power generation while maintaining the desired rotor speed and avoiding equipment overloads. To fulfill the control objectives, the classical model-based control (MBC) has been widely used, which refers to two controllers: torque controller (TC) and pitch controller (PC). In this work, the drawbacks of MBC for VSWTs are studied extensively. It reveals that there are transition issues between the TC and PC, and over-speed problems under large turbulent wind when only MBC is taken. To improve the control performance of the VSWT, an integrated control solution …

Analysis And Design Of An Interleaved Current-Fed High Step-Up Quasi-Resonant Dc-Dc Converter For Fuel Cell Applications, Sina Salehi, Behrooz Vahidi, Jafar Milimonfared, Maghdad Taheri, Hadi Moradi Jan 2015

Analysis And Design Of An Interleaved Current-Fed High Step-Up Quasi-Resonant Dc-Dc Converter For Fuel Cell Applications, Sina Salehi, Behrooz Vahidi, Jafar Milimonfared, Maghdad Taheri, Hadi Moradi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper proposes a current-fed quasi-resonant converter with soft switching method. Input current ripple is reduced by employing two boost circuits at the input, which makes this converter appropriate for fuel cell application. Current stress on switches is reduced because of the resonance in switches, and also, as a result of zero voltage switching in switches, switching losses will be reduced in this proposed converter. In the output, the reverse recovery problem of diodes is alleviated by zero current switching, so there is no need for fast diodes anymore. The reduction of losses improves the efficiency, and in a wide …

Fuzzy Sliding Mode Control Applied To A Doubly Fed Induction Generator For Wind Turbines, Sid Ahmed El Mehdi Ardjoun, Mohamed Abid

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper an indirect vector control using fuzzy sliding mode control is proposed for a double-fed induction generator (DFIG), applied for a wind energy conversion system in variable speed. The objective is to independently control the active and reactive power generated by the DFIG, which is decoupled by the orientation of the flux. The sliding mode control finds its strongest justification for the problem concerning the use of a robust nonlinear control law for the model uncertainties. As far as the fuzzy mode control is concerned, it aims at reducing the chattering effect. The obtained results show the increasing …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper develops a novel self-tuned fuzzy damping control scheme for an interline power flow controller (IPFC) to suppress the interarea mode of oscillations in a multimachine power system. The nonlinear adaptive damping controller is based on coordinated operation of two fuzzy inference systems. The first one produces the required $q$-axis voltage reference of the quasi multipulse series converter in response to generator angle oscillations, while the second one is used to tune the output of the first one online for further reducing the error signal using a given set of fuzzy rules. The simplex method is employed to search …

Sensitivity Analysis And Optimum Design For The Stator Of Synchronous Reluctance Machines Using The Coupled Finite Element And Taguchi Methods, Hossein Azizi, Abolfazl Vahedi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents an investigation of the effect and optimization of stator geometry design parameters on the performance of synchronous reluctance machines (SynRMs). The level of importance of the stator design variable on the characteristic of the SynRM is determined using both the Taguchi method and a parametric analysis. An optimum design parameter combination is obtained using sensitivity analysis along with signal-to-noise ratio results. The 2-dimensional finite element model (FEM) of a SynRM is used to perform a sensitivity analysis and construct a Taguchi design of the experiment. The FEM simulation results confirm that the performance of the SynRM can …

Mras-Based Sensorless Speed Backstepping Control For Induction Machine, Using A Flux Sliding Mode Observer, Mohamed Moutchou, Ahmed Abbou, Hassan Mahmoudi Jan 2015

Mras-Based Sensorless Speed Backstepping Control For Induction Machine, Using A Flux Sliding Mode Observer, Mohamed Moutchou, Ahmed Abbou, Hassan Mahmoudi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, an induction machine rotor speed and rotor flux control using a sensorless backstepping control scheme is discussed. The most interesting point of this technique is that it deals with the nonlinearity of a high-order system by using the virtual control variable to make this system simple, and thus the control outputs can be derived step by step through appropriate Lyapunov functions. To avoid the use of a mechanical sensor, the rotor speed estimation is made by an observer using the model reference adaptive system (MRAS) technique; in order to estimate rotor flux, a sliding mode observer is …

Short-Term Load Forecasting Using Mixed Lazy Learning Method, Seyed-Masoud Barakati, Ali Akbar Gharaveisi, Seyed-Mohammad Reza Rafiei

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A novel short-term load forecasting method based on the lazy learning (LL) algorithm is proposed. The LL algorithm's input data are electrical load information, daily electricity consumption patterns, and temperatures in a specified region. In order to verify the ability of the proposed method, a load forecasting problem, using the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection electrical load data, is carried out. Three LL models are proposed: constant, linear, and mixed models. First, the performances of the 3 developed models are compared using the root mean square error technique. The best technique is then selected to compete with the state-of-the-art neural network (NN) …
