Bidirectional In-Situ Analysis And Visualization Of Fluid Structure Interactions With Applications In Blood Flow, Nazariy Tishchenko Jan 2024

Bidirectional In-Situ Analysis And Visualization Of Fluid Structure Interactions With Applications In Blood Flow, Nazariy Tishchenko

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Interactive blood flow simulation has applications in the understanding of complex fluids, training medical professionals, diagnostics, and surgical procedure planning. Bidirectional in situ visualization and analysis are much needed to streamline the analysis of large-scale patient-specific blood flow simulations. The in situ component ensures the live visualization of the simulation results while the simulation is running, and the bidirectional component allows for real-time control and configuration of the simulation parameters (i.e., setting and retrieving the simulation parameters and data based on need). In this project, a highly accurate multiphysics simulation was instrumented to work with an existing bidirectional in situ framework. …

Ai-Based Defect Detection In Aerospace Ultrasonic Signals, Rami Issac Lake Jan 2024

Ai-Based Defect Detection In Aerospace Ultrasonic Signals, Rami Issac Lake

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Ensuring the safety and integrity of materials and structures throughout the manufacturing cycle is a critical concern across various industries, including aerospace, automotive, oiland gas, and civil engineering. Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) techniques allow for the examination of materials without causing damage or alteration, enabling the early detection of potential issues before materials are utilized in the field. The inspection of fuselage composites presents a particular challenge due to their complex structures, diverse materials, and differences in thickness, making defect detection a challenging yet crucial task. Moreover, defects of various types and causes can emerge across all depths of the material …

Engagement Detection Using Prosodic Cues: An Approach For Measuring Child Emotional Engagement Level In Child-Robot Interaction Scenario, Mustafa Oztoprak Jan 2022

Engagement Detection Using Prosodic Cues: An Approach For Measuring Child Emotional Engagement Level In Child-Robot Interaction Scenario, Mustafa Oztoprak

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The ultimate goal of advanced child-robot interaction is to develop a high-level intelligencecommunication channel in a closed-loop configuration with the child as the focal point of the instructional scenario. This goal can be met by establishing efficient sensing mechanisms on the robot’s side, such as automatic engagement measuring, which will allow the robot to alter its behavior or even the instructional scenario’s execution.Recent researches, regarding engagement recognition systems mostly based on facial or multi-modal features. We would like to investigate this topic using prosodic cues only. We believe speech characteristics are more likely to be related to child speaker engagement level. This …

A Machine Learning Approach To Intended Motion Prediction For Upper Extremity Exoskeletons, Justin Berdell Jan 2022

A Machine Learning Approach To Intended Motion Prediction For Upper Extremity Exoskeletons, Justin Berdell

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

A fully solid-state, software-defined, one-handed, handle-type control device built around a machine-learning (ML) model that provides intuitive and simultaneous control in position and orientation each in a full three degrees-of-freedom (DOF) is proposed in this paper. The device, referred to as the “Smart Handle”, and it is compact, lightweight, and only reliant on low-cost and readily available sensors and materials for construction. Mobility chairs for persons with motor difficulties could make use of a control device that can learn to recognize arbitrary inputs as control commands. Upper-extremity exoskeletons used in occupational settings and rehabilitation require a natural control device like …

Optimizing Cluster Sets For The Scan Statistic Using Local Search, James Shulgan Jan 2020

Optimizing Cluster Sets For The Scan Statistic Using Local Search, James Shulgan

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

In recent years, scattering sensors to produce wireless sensor networks (WSN) has been proposed for detecting localized events in large areas. Because sensor measurements are noisy, the WSN needs to use statistical methods such as the scan statistic. The scan statistic groups measurements into various clusters, computes a cluster statistic for each cluster, and decides that an event has happened if any of the statistics exceeds a threshold. Previous researchers have investigated the performance of the scan statistic to detect events; however, little attention was given to the optimization of which clusters the scan statistic should use. Using the scan …

Real-Time Traffic Sign Detection And Classification Based On A Video Feed, Victor Ciuntu Jan 2020

Real-Time Traffic Sign Detection And Classification Based On A Video Feed, Victor Ciuntu

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Autonomous vehicle development is currently progressing at a very fast pace and traffic sign detection and classification has an important role in it. This thesis looks at the history of autonomous vehicles as well as different implementations for traffic sign detection and classification. Multiple possible approaches are analyzed with the final goal of doing this task in real-time using a portable system.

To accomplish this task, the final solution uses a convolutional neural network for detection and classification combined with a custom optical character recognition algorithm for speed limit signs. The optical character recognition algorithm is built from the ground …

Exploring Cyber-Physical Systems, Misbah Uddin Mohammed Jan 2019

Exploring Cyber-Physical Systems, Misbah Uddin Mohammed

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The advances in IOT, Computer Vision, AI and Machine Learning have made these technologies ubiquitous to our daily lives. From Smart Phones to Connected Vehicles, Cyber Physical systems have been interspersed into everything we interact in today’s world. The aim or this thesis was to explore these advances in Cyber Physical Systems and analyze the different sectors they were affecting. We then hand-picked certain domains and explored further by carrying out practical projects using some of the latest software and hardware resources available. Technologies like Amazon Alexa services, NVIDIA Jetson boards, TensorFlow, OpenCV, NodeJS were heavily employed in our various …

Sky Surveys Scheduling Using Reinforcement Learning, Andres Felipe Alba Hernandez Jan 2019

Sky Surveys Scheduling Using Reinforcement Learning, Andres Felipe Alba Hernandez

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Modern cosmic sky surveys (e.g., CMB S4, DES, LSST) collect a complex diversity of astronomical objects. Each of class of objects presents different requirements for observation time and sensitivity. For determining the best sequence of exposures for mapping the sky systematically, conventional scheduling methods do not optimize the use of survey time and resources. Dynamic sky survey scheduling is an NP-hard problem that has been therefore treated primarily with heuristic methods. We present an alternative scheduling method based on reinforcement learning (RL) that aims to optimize the use of telescope resources for scheduling sky surveys.

We present an exploration of …
