Carnegie Mellon University’s Silicon Valley Campus (CMU-SV) attracts science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students who want to make an impact in Silicon Valley, an area known for its innovative and entrepreneurial culture. The goal of the various CMU-SV masters programs is to provide a transformative educational experience – one that changes how the students perform in the workplace. The students are immersed in a “learn-by-doing” environment that makes them valuable members of the workforce as they graduate with practical experience in high-demand technical areas.

Despite this “state-of-the-art” graduate education in software engineering and software management, when it comes time …

Comparing Extreme Programming And Waterfall Project Results, Feng Ji, Todd Sedano

Waterfall and Extreme Programming are two software project methods used for project management. Although there are a number of opinions comparing the two methods regarding how they should be applied, none have used project data to clearly conclude which one is better. In this paper, we present the results of a controlled empirical study conducted at Carnegie Mellon University in Silicon Valley to learn about the effective transition from traditional development to agile development. We conducted a comparison research against these two approaches. Multiple teams were assigned a project; some used Waterfall development, others used Extreme Programming. The purpose of …

The Carnegie Mellon’s Silicon Valley Campus offers a master’s degree in Software Engineering, with technical and development management tracks, targeted at working software professionals in Silicon Valley. We believe the program to be unique in that it is entirely team-based and project-centered. Students learn by doing as they are coached just in time by faculty in the context of their work on authentic projects, and they are evaluated based on what they produce. In response to our interactions with an industry characterized by innovation and short project development timelines, the program evolved from one focused on “high ceremony” processes to …

Software Engineering For Startups, Todd Sedano

My interests include finding Effective Processes and learning which processes are best suited for startups. The nature of small business, the agility to change direction quickly, allows it to handle minor bad software practices better. However, failure for a startup may crater the company where as a large company may recover from the fumble. Due to the fierce competition for a startup with limited resources, we should consider tasks that reduce the time to market.
