Predicting Geotechnical Parameters From Seismic Wave Velocity Using Artificial Neural Networks, Fatema Tuz Johora, Craig J. Hickey, Hakan Yasarer Dec 2022

Predicting Geotechnical Parameters From Seismic Wave Velocity Using Artificial Neural Networks, Fatema Tuz Johora, Craig J. Hickey, Hakan Yasarer

Faculty and Student Publications

Geotechnical investigation plays an indispensable role in site characterization and provides necessary data for various construction projects. However, geotechnical measurements are time-consuming, point-based, and invasive. Non-destructive geophysical measurements (seismic wave velocity) can complement geotechnical measurements to save project money and time. However, correlations between geotechnical and seismic wave velocity are crucial in order to maximize the benefit of geophysical information. In this work, artificial neural networks (ANNs) models are developed to forecast geotechnical parameters from seismic wave velocity. Specifically, published seismic wave velocity, liquid limit, plastic limit, water content, and dry density from field and laboratory measurements are used to …

Numerical Investigation Of Sediment Flushing And Morphological Changes In Tamsui River Estuary Through Monsoons And Typhoons, Tung Chou Hsieh, Yan Ding, Keh Chia Yeh, Ren Kai Jhong Jun 2022

Numerical Investigation Of Sediment Flushing And Morphological Changes In Tamsui River Estuary Through Monsoons And Typhoons, Tung Chou Hsieh, Yan Ding, Keh Chia Yeh, Ren Kai Jhong

Faculty and Student Publications

The removal of reservoir silt and the restoration of existing reservoir capacities through land excavation and hydraulic sediment flushing have become necessary. Hydraulic sediment flushing discharge changes flow and sediment conditions of the downstream river channel. In the Tamsui River estuary in Taiwan, sediment flushing from the Shihmen reservoir upstream has potential impacts on the morphology of the navigation channels and the adjacent coasts. This study employed a validated coastal and estuarine processes model to investigate: (1) the influence of sediment flushing and tidal levels on morphological changes during flood and flushing‐discharge operations of the reservoir, and (2) the differences …

Three-Dimensional Numerical Modeling Of Flow Hydrodynamics And Cohesive Sediment Transport In Enid Lake, Mississippi, Xiaobo Chao, A. K. M. Azad Hossain, Mohammad Z. Al-Hamdan, Yafei Jia, James V. Cizdziel Apr 2022

Three-Dimensional Numerical Modeling Of Flow Hydrodynamics And Cohesive Sediment Transport In Enid Lake, Mississippi, Xiaobo Chao, A. K. M. Azad Hossain, Mohammad Z. Al-Hamdan, Yafei Jia, James V. Cizdziel

Faculty and Student Publications

Enid Lake is one of the largest reservoirs located in Yazoo River Basin, the largest basin in the state of Mississippi. The lake was impounded by Enid Dam on the Yocona River in Yalobusha County and covers an area of 30 square kilometers. It provides significant natural and recreational resources. The soils in this region are highly erodible, resulting in a large amount of fine-grained cohesive sediment discharged into the lake. In this study, a 3D numerical model was developed to simulate the free surface hydrodynamics and transportation of cohesive sediment with a median diameter of 0.0025 to 0.003 mm …

Improving The 2d Numerical Simulations On Local Scour Hole Around Spur Dikes, Chung Ta Liao, Keh Chia Yeh, Yin Chi Lan, Ren Kai Jhong, Yafei Jia May 2021

Improving The 2d Numerical Simulations On Local Scour Hole Around Spur Dikes, Chung Ta Liao, Keh Chia Yeh, Yin Chi Lan, Ren Kai Jhong, Yafei Jia

Faculty and Student Publications

Local scour is a common threat to structures such as bridge piers, abutments, and dikes that are constructed on natural rivers. To reduce the risk of foundation failure, the understanding of local scour phenomenon around hydraulic structures is important. The well-predicted scour depth can be used as a reference for structural foundation design and river management. Numerical simulation is relatively efficient at studying these issues. Currently, two-dimensional (2D) mobile-bed models are widely used for river engineering. However, a common 2D model is inadequate for solving the three-dimensional (3D) flow field and local scour phenomenon because of the depth-averaged hypothesis. This …

Evaluating Machine Learning Models For Semantic Segmentation Over Cloud Images For Classification, Harsh Nagarkar Apr 2020

Evaluating Machine Learning Models For Semantic Segmentation Over Cloud Images For Classification, Harsh Nagarkar

Honors Theses

Due to the increasing number of available approaches nowadays, choosing the most accurate image semantic segmentation model has become hard. The purpose of this research is to find the best-performing image semantic segmentation model for Cloud classification. For the purpose of this study, a data set of cloud images from the Max Planck Institute for meteorology is used. These images were taken from the by two NASA space satellite.Three main models UNet, PSPNet and FPN were used in combination of 4 differ-ent encoder Inception-ResNet-v2, MobileNet-v2, ResNet-34, and ResNet 101. After training all the models in the Mississippi Center for Super …

Minet Magnetic Indoor Localization, Michael Drake Apr 2020

Minet Magnetic Indoor Localization, Michael Drake

Honors Theses

Indoor localization is a modern problem of computer science that has no unified solution, as there are significant trade-offs involved with every technique. Magnetic localization, though less popular than WiFi signal based localization, is a sub-field that is rooted in infrastructure-free design, which can allow universal setup. Magnetic localization is also often paired with probabilistic programming, which provides a powerful method of estimation, given a limited understanding of the environment. This thesis presents Minet, which is a particle filter based localization system using the Earth's geomagnetic field. It explores the novel idea of state space limitation as a method of …
