Public participation plays an important role in wet weather pollution management. However, the effects of participation programs on local water quality are often difficult to quantify. This project aims to quantify the potential effects of a community based, non-structural, BMP aimed at controlling inputs to combined sewage systems by encouraging residents to reduce their water use during rain events. A household could participate by reducing the amount of water they use for flushing toilets, washing dishes, taking showers, etc. during rain events; thereby reducing stress on the system during the time of highest demand. The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA) in partnership with the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) has been interested in addressing the cumulative impacts of land use changes due to urbanization to two water bodies, the Nottawasaga River and Nottawasaga Bay. In order to assess these impacts, an Assimilative Capacity Studies (ACS) was planned for decision-making on land use. The ACS involved application of a comprehensive 3-D hydrodynamic and transport model called GEMSS®. The model was calibrated both for hydrodynamics (currents and drogue trajectories) and baseline water quality measurements. Fracking, Water Quality and Public Health: Examining Current Laws and Regulations (March 20)

Improved technology developments in directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing, more commonly known as "fracking," have resulted in an oil and gas production boom nationwide. Fracking involves pumping pressurized water, sand, and chemicals down wells to crack bedrock, freeing petroleum and natural gas. Wastewater discharges, hydraulic fracturing fluid releases, and other accidental spills pose potential water quality risks, sparking concern for public health.

This webinar will examine the laws and regulations governing water quality issues related to fracking, recent state court decisions affecting regulations, and implications for public health.

Stormwater runoff from urban areas is a major source of pollution to surface water bodies. The discharge of nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus is particularly damaging as it results in harmful algal blooms which can limit the beneficial use of a water body. Stormwater best management practices (BMPs) have been developed over the years to help address this issue. Elevated level of fluoride (F) in drinking water is a well-recognized risk factor of dental fluorosis (DF). While considering optimization of region-specific standards for F, it is reasonable, however, to consider how local diet, water sourcing practices, and non-F elements in water may be related to health outcomes. In this study, we hypothesized that non-F elements in groundwater and lifestyle and demographic characteristics may be independent predictors or modifiers of the effects of F on teeth. Beef cattle feedlots contain unconsolidated material that accumulates on the feedlot surface during a feeding cycle. This study was conducted to measure the effects of varying diameters of unconsolidated surface material and varying flow rates on nutrient concentrations in runoff. Unconsolidated surface material with an average diameter of 4.76, 9.53, 19.1, or 47.5 mm and a composite sample with a 15.2 mm mean diameter were placed within 0.75 m wide × 4.0 m long plot areas. To maintain the quality of receiving water bodies, it is desirable to remove total phosphorus (TP) in stormwater runoff. Many media filtration technologies have been developed to achieve TP and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) removal. Efficient media adsorption is essential to insure control of stormwater phosphorus inputs to the receiving water body. This project develops and analyzes a functionalized Biosorption Media (BAM) to remove phosphorus species from stormwater runoff.
