A Simplified Method Of Estimating Drilling And Blasting Costs Of A Highway Through-Cut Excavation In Rock, Donald J. Roberts Jan 1963

A Simplified Method Of Estimating Drilling And Blasting Costs Of A Highway Through-Cut Excavation In Rock, Donald J. Roberts

Masters Theses

"The development of cost estimating methods has been the most neglected phase of highway engineering. Overlooked in particular has been the development of an easily understood and easily applied method of estimating the costs of the drilling and blasting operations involved in a highway through-cut excavation in rock.

This investigation developed such a method by adapting and applying recent developments in the blasting planning field. The study was limited to small diameter blastholes and excavations in lifts of less than thirty feet. Normal efficient construction practices were presumed.

It was found from the investigation that the blast geometry and, subsequently, …

Derivation Of A Method To Determine Reactions And Deflection Of A Continous Beam On An Elastic Foundation, Louis Richard Fuka Jan 1963

Derivation Of A Method To Determine Reactions And Deflection Of A Continous Beam On An Elastic Foundation, Louis Richard Fuka

Masters Theses

“The purpose of this thesis is to develop a method for determining the reactions and deflection curve of continuous beams partially supported by an elastic foundation. The method involves representation of an arbitrary loading and the intermediate redundant reactions as Fourier Series. Redundant intermediate reactions are determined by the solution of an equal number of linear equations. The remaining reactions are determined by the application of statics.

This same method can be used for simply supported beams on an elastic foundation and for continuous beams without an elastic foundation”--Abstract, page ii.

Removal Of Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate By Precipitation With Cationic Surfactants., Phillip E. Custer

Masters Theses

"The extensive use of synthetic detergents, particularly the nonbiodegradable alkyl benzene sulfonate (ABS), has created many difficulties in water and wastewater. Although a number of processes have been proposed for the abatement of the synthetic detergent problem, a completely satisfactory solution has yet to be developed.

Following a preliminary investigation, three cationic agents, Bionol R0-50, G-263 and Primafloc C-5 were selected to be studied in detail in order to determine their ability to remove ABS by precipitation. Studies were conducted in deionized water, river water and domestic sewage systems using an initial ABS concentration of 10 mg/1 and cationic dosages …

Behavior Of Clay Under Compaction By Vibratory Rollers., Glenn R. Taylor Jan 1963

Behavior Of Clay Under Compaction By Vibratory Rollers., Glenn R. Taylor

Masters Theses

"This thesis presents an analysis of the behavior of a lean clay when compacted by commercial vibratory rollers using the results of field investigations conducted by the U. S. Army Engineer Experiment Station, Vicksburg, Mississippi. Conclusions reached indicate that a lean clay soil will behave substantially the same under compaction by a vibratory roller as it does under other conventional methods of field compaction. The relationship of amplitude to the density and moisture content is also examined in this paper with the conclusion that the variations in amplitude of a vibratory roller is not significant as a measure of the …

Swelling Properties Of Putnam Soil, Oscar M. Palma Jan 1963

Swelling Properties Of Putnam Soil, Oscar M. Palma

Masters Theses

"Volume change of Putnam soil under different moisture contents and the swelling pressure developed by the soil at the same moisture contents were investigated using standard test procedures.

The theory of one dimensional consolidation of Terzaghi was reviewed as well as the literature on swelling and swell pressure.

It was found that swell depends mainly on the initial water content, while swelling pressure depends mainly on the dry density of the soil"--Abstract, page ii.

Investigation Of Stresses And Deflections In An Inclined Beam., Jayant Chhaganlal Soni Jan 1963

Investigation Of Stresses And Deflections In An Inclined Beam., Jayant Chhaganlal Soni

Masters Theses

"In this thesis an investigation has been made of the effect of inclination on strains and deflections in an inclined rectangular steel beam. To compute the strains and deflections Newmark's Numerical Procedure has been used. An experiment has been carried out on a rectangular steel beam for four different load increments and eight different inclinations. To compare the experimental and analytical data, graphs have been drawn for the experimental and analytical quantities of strains and deflections for all the four load increments and eight different angles of inclination. Results of the investigation indicate that the strains and deflections at inclinations …

A Study Of Chemical Stabilization Of The Swell Properties Of Putman Soil, Dale E. Dobson Jan 1963

A Study Of Chemical Stabilization Of The Swell Properties Of Putman Soil, Dale E. Dobson

Masters Theses

"The theory of chemical stabilization of a swelling clay was reviewed. The effect of several chemicals on the engineering properties of Putnam soil was investigated using the Atterberg tests. Strength of concentration of chemical additives versus preferred structural orientation of treated Putnam was investigated using sedimentation procedures similar to those used in the hydrometer analysis of fine grained soil sizes. Swell tests were conducted under a static load of 1.25 psi on untreated Putnam, Putnam in combination with sodium carbonate, and Putnam treated with calcium hydroxide. These tests were conducted at varying initial moisture contents and dry densities.

It was …

Effect Of Stiffness Ratio On Stresses In A Rigid Frame., James Juh-Ling Tang Jan 1963

Effect Of Stiffness Ratio On Stresses In A Rigid Frame., James Juh-Ling Tang

Masters Theses

"The elastic center method has been used to analyze several rigid frames with different geometric configurations and with component members of variable cross-sections. The basic approach is to divide the frame into small segments to solve this problem. From this analysis the best frame which is in the range of an economical design may be obtained for a given loading condition"--Abstract, p.2

The Effect Of Haunched Members On Vierendeel Trusses, Rashmikant D. Parikh Jan 1963

The Effect Of Haunched Members On Vierendeel Trusses, Rashmikant D. Parikh

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study was to analyze a Vierendeel Truss and determine the effect of haunches on moments. Loads were applied at the interior panel points in sequence. The classic slope-deflection method with coefficients taken from a table of frame constants (8) was used for the analysis.

In this investigation, one effect of haunches was determined to be the distribution of moments more evenly throughout the structure. Also, they insure rigidity of the joints and increase architectural flexibility"--Abstract, page ii.

Electrolytic Corrosion Of Reinforcing Steel In Concrete., Lawrence D. Green Jan 1963

Electrolytic Corrosion Of Reinforcing Steel In Concrete., Lawrence D. Green

Masters Theses

"Deterioration of bridge decks has increased the interest in the corrosion of steel in concrete. A comprehensive review of literature on the subject of electrolytic corrosion of steel in concrete is presented in this thesis.

Development of theory from the literature leads to the following statements. There are two causes for electrolytic corrosion of steel in concrete, stray currents from direct current power sources and the formation of macro-cells within the structure. The corrosion caused by the macro-cells appears to be the more important of the two. Anodic areas exhibit corrosion of the steel and cracking of the concrete.

Many …

The Effect Of Shear Deformation On The Slope Deflection Coefficients., Rajni C. Amin Jan 1963

The Effect Of Shear Deformation On The Slope Deflection Coefficients., Rajni C. Amin

Masters Theses

"This study was made to determine the effect of shear deformation on stiffness coefficients and carry over factors that are normally used in the calculation of moments in continuous beam or frames by the slope-deflection and Moment Distribution method.

Using the method of total strain energy, the vertical shear V and angle of rotation Ө caused by unit moment were determined for bending moment only and then determined for shear deformation plus bending moment, then carry over factors and stiffness coefficients were computed for each case. The relative effect of shear deformation is small for small depth ratio db …

Composite Beams In Building Constructions., Mahendrasinhji M. Jhala Jan 1963

Composite Beams In Building Constructions., Mahendrasinhji M. Jhala

Masters Theses

"The use of composite beams is very common in bridge and. in building construction due to the fact that a savings in material is effected.

The study herein shows a simplified procedure for design of composite beams. A number of design charts for rapid selection of a wide-flange section and the necessary cover plates are presented herein. These charts are based on economic sections of steel beams when used in a simple span, if one knows the approximate depth of the beam, slab thickness, allowable stresses in the steel and concrete and live load moment, it is very easy to …

The Electrochemical Degradation Of Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate., Melvin David Rickard Jan 1963

The Electrochemical Degradation Of Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate., Melvin David Rickard

Masters Theses

"The ever increasing use of nonbiodegradable synthetic detergents, mainly the alkyl benzene sulfonates, has created difficulties in water and wastewater treatment, and in stream pollution. Although considerable attention has been given to this problem, no solution has been developed which can be effectively employed in the abatement of detergent pollution.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of the use of direct current electrochemical degradation in the removal of alkyl benzene sulfonates (ABS) from water. The rate and degree of completion of the electrochemical reactions were determined, and the nature of the end products formed was investigated. …
