Field Test Of Electrokinetically-Delivered Thermally Activated Persulfate For Remediation Of Chlorinated Solvents In Clay, Nicholas Andrew Head Aug 2018

Field Test Of Electrokinetically-Delivered Thermally Activated Persulfate For Remediation Of Chlorinated Solvents In Clay, Nicholas Andrew Head

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Due to extensive industrial applications, chlorinated solvents are among the most prevalent groundwater contaminants found at hazardous sites. Given their recalcitrant nature and adverse health effects upon exposure, effective remediation technologies are needed to treat sites impacted by chlorinated solvents. In-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) has shown success; however, its performance is often hindered in low-permeability media due to the transport of oxidants in such soils being limited. This field-scale study investigated the novel approach of applying electrokinetics (EK) to enhance the delivery of persulfate and electrical resistance heating (ERH) to activate the delivered persulfate for low-permeability soil remediation. Results demonstrated …

Electrokinetically-Enhanced Emplacement Of Lactate In A Chlorinated Solvent Contaminated Clay Site To Promote Bioremediation, Ainsley M. Inglis Aug 2018

Electrokinetically-Enhanced Emplacement Of Lactate In A Chlorinated Solvent Contaminated Clay Site To Promote Bioremediation, Ainsley M. Inglis

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Bioremediation through the injection of electron donors and bacterial cultures is effective at treating chlorinated solvent contamination but faces limitations in low permeability zones where the injected amendments cannot be delivered successfully. Using electrokinetics in combination with bioremediation to enhance the delivery of amendments was tested at a chlorinated solvent contaminated field site, where lactate was injected into clay under a direct current. Advection at locations with higher hydraulic conductivities contributed to lactate transport and dilution of aqueous chlorinated solvents. There was evidence of successful delivery of lactate by electromigration (EM) in all monitoring locations with EM lactate transport rates …

Hydraulic And Electrokinetic Delivery Of Remediants For In-Situ Remediation, Ahmed I. A. Chowdhury Sep 2016

Hydraulic And Electrokinetic Delivery Of Remediants For In-Situ Remediation, Ahmed I. A. Chowdhury

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Nano-scale zero valent iron (nZVI) has shown promising mobility and in-situ reactivity with chlorinated volatile organic compounds when injected into saturated porous media. The current study evaluated nZVI mobility and subsequent reactivity with in-situ contaminants in a variably saturated porous media. The nZVI particles, synthesized onsite at subzero temperatures, demonstrated complete trichloroethene (TCE) degradation within the target area. Furthermore, a three dimensional finite difference model (CompSim) was utilized to investigate nZVI mobility in variably saturated zones. Model predicted well head data were in very good agreement with field observations. Simulation results showed that the injected slurry migrated radially outward from …

Electrokinetics And Vacuum Combined Dewatering Of Oil Sand Tailings, Rui Zhang Jun 2016

Electrokinetics And Vacuum Combined Dewatering Of Oil Sand Tailings, Rui Zhang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

One of the challenges faced by the oil sand industry is the dewatering of mature fine oil sands tailings (MFT) due to the low permeability. Vacuum pressure or electrokinetic (EK) dewatering is effective to meet this objective. This research was focused on the experimental study and analytical modelling to explore the influence of combined vacuum and EK treatment on MFT. In this study, systematical experiments on MFT recovered from the northern Alberta were carried out. At first, the characterization and EK cell tests were conducted to measure the basic properties and the coefficient of electroosmotic permeability (ke) of MFT. Secondly, …

Electrokinetic Dewatering Of Oil Sands Tailings, Yu Guo Sep 2012

Electrokinetic Dewatering Of Oil Sands Tailings, Yu Guo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Oil sands tailings are the final product of oil sands processing and in the form of slurry with very low solid content. After sedimentation, due to a low hydraulic conductivity of the tailings, both dewatering and consolidating the tailings are difficult. Since electrokinetic (EK) is an effective method to consolidate low permeability soils, the objective of this study is to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of EK dewatering of MFT, a man-made geomaterial. Two series of tests were conducted in this study. In the first series, four EK cell tests were performed on oil sands tailings to measure the electroosmotic …
