Comprehensive Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Pedestrian Countdown Signals On Road Users In Michigan, Richard Atta Boateng

Pedestrian countdown signals (PCSs) are specifically designed to improve pedestrian safety at intersections. Installation of these devices may be with push buttons or without push buttons. Studies have shown that intersections where PCSs with push buttons have been installed have recorded reduction in pedestrian violation as well as reduction in the number of pedestrians trapped in the roadway. Studies have also shown that PCSs may be used by approaching drivers in the same way as other traffic signal anticipation devices such as green signal countdown (GSC). Halation or irradiation makes guide sign fonts difficult to read. Missing the necessary guide sign information causes anxiety and confusion to drivers, and hence may lead to crashes. In order to avoid or mitigate the situation a newer font, Clearview, is used to provide better readability at long distances. In a similar context the lack of brightness in sheeting material for warning signs reduces conspicuity of sings. Installation of fluorescent yellow sheeting has been done to provide signs with more noticeable and brighter materials.
