Laboratory Testing Of Railroad Flatcars For Use As Highway Bridges On Low-Volume Roads To Determine Ultimate Strength And Redundancy, Teresa L. Washeleski, Robert Connor, Jason B. Lloyd

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Technical Reports

Railroad flatcars (RRFCs) are a convenient option to replace existing deteriorating bridge structures on low-volume roads. They are typically used as the bridge superstructure by placing two or more flatcars side-by-side to achieve the desired bridge width. Utilizing RRFCs as a bridge allows for rapid construction and greater cost savings compared to traditional practices. These benefits make them an attractive solution for rural communities in Indiana, as well as other states.

Uncertainty remains about the response under higher loads than could be easily achieved in the field and the level of redundancy of railroad flatcar bridges. Using RRFCs as bridges …

Control Charts As A Productivity Improvement Tool In Construction, Jospeh Hubert Ault Apr 2013

Control Charts As A Productivity Improvement Tool In Construction, Jospeh Hubert Ault

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

This study examined the use of individuals control charts to facilitate the productivity improvement of repetitive construction processes. Cycles times for excavation, forming, and reinforcing processes were observed using stratified random sampling during the construction of six residential home foundations. The cycle time information was plotted on control charts followed by an intervention, with the applicable crew members and management, to analyze the charts and propose solutions to any problems identified. Following the intervention, more samples were collected for comparison to the baseline observations collected before the intervention. The mean cycle times were compared before and after the interventions using …

Assessment Procedures For Paved And Gravel Roads, Claudio Figueroa, Bradley Fotsch, Sarah M. Hubbard, John Haddock Apr 2013

Assessment Procedures For Paved And Gravel Roads, Claudio Figueroa, Bradley Fotsch, Sarah M. Hubbard, John Haddock

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications

The funding available to local agencies in Indiana to manage roadways has decreased in recent years, and many agencies cannot provide adequate maintenance with the available resources. Consequently, agencies are doing everything they can to evaluate the least expensive method to maintain their roads that will meet their objectives and needs. In some cases, the most appropriate surface type is a paved road, and in some cases, it is a gravel road. The decision as to the most appropriate surface type depends on a variety of factors, such as cost, traffic volume, development and public input. The purpose of this …

Characterizing Reliability Of Manual Intersection Turning Movement Counts Using Modern Data Collection Technology, Gary Shoup, Steve M. Remias, Alexander M. Hainen, Gannon Grimmer, Alexander D. Davis Mar 2013

Characterizing Reliability Of Manual Intersection Turning Movement Counts Using Modern Data Collection Technology, Gary Shoup, Steve M. Remias, Alexander M. Hainen, Gannon Grimmer, Alexander D. Davis

JTRP Other Publications and Reports

Collecting intersection turning movement counts at intersections is an essential data collection task for many types of traffic engineering studies. On a daily basis, consulting firms and agencies collect turning movement counts that are used for preparing traffic impact studies, determining design hours for road improvements, and the retiming of traffic signals. Although there is a substantial body of literature on the stochastic nature of traffic volumes and how they vary by time, day of week, and season, the literature is quite sparse on how accurately turning movement counts can be collected at signalized intersections. The objective of this paper …

Performance Measures For Local Agency Traffic Signals, Jay Grossman, Darcy M. Bullock

Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Technical Reports

The project focused on accelerating implementation of research recommendations emerging from traffic signal research projects conducted by the National Cooperative Research Program and Indiana Department of Transportation. This project developed specification language that was subsequently used in procurements in Elkhart County, IN; Lafayette, IN; and Morgantown, WV. The performance measures specified in Appendix A and subsequently deployed in Elkhart County, IN, and Lafayette, IN, were the first commercial deployment of real-time traffic signal performance measures recommended by NCHRP 3-79a. The deployment in Lafayette, IN, received an ACEC award in March 2012. In addition to accelerating implementation, this research project examined …

Investigations Of Attitudes Towards Offshore Wind Farm Development In Ireland: Their Implication Towards Future Development Of The Industry., Aidan Melia Feb 2013

Investigations Of Attitudes Towards Offshore Wind Farm Development In Ireland: Their Implication Towards Future Development Of The Industry., Aidan Melia

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

This current research investigates what the attitudes of Irish people are towards the development of offshore wind farms in Ireland. Using a qualitative approach, a questionnaire is carefully designed and distributed among a sample population from three coastal communities. One is located on the west coast and two on the east coast. The two locations on the east coast have an involvement in offshore wind farms. One of the locations plays host to Ireland’s only offshore wind farm, while there are plans in place for an offshore wind farm at the other location. The results from the questionnaires are analyzed …

Instrumentation And Axial Load Testing Of Displacement Piles, Adriano V.D. Bica, Monica Prezzi, Hoyoung Seo, Rodrigo Salgado, Daehyeon Kim Feb 2013

Instrumentation And Axial Load Testing Of Displacement Piles, Adriano V.D. Bica, Monica Prezzi, Hoyoung Seo, Rodrigo Salgado, Daehyeon Kim

Lyles School of Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Despite the fact that results of many instrumented pile load tests have been reported in the literature, it is difficult to find well-documented instrumentation procedures that can be used when planning a load testing programme. A load test programme designed to investigate various aspects of the design and behaviour of driven steel piles is discussed in the present paper. Although the literature contains information on load testing of instrumented piles driven in either sand or clay, limited information is available regarding their axial load response in transitional soils (soils composed of various amounts of clay, silt and sand). Results are …

Bubbledeck, Purdue Ect Team Jan 2013

Bubbledeck, Purdue Ect Team

ECT Fact Sheets

Conventional horizontal concrete slabs are heavy that limit their spans. Enhancement of span results in addition of beams that increases the cost of the structure. Thus, there is a need for a technology that will help in increasing the span by reducing weight of the span. BubbleDeck is a revolutionary construction method that virtually eliminates concrete from the middle of a floor slab between columns that does not perform any structural function, thereby dramatically reducing structural dead weight. BubbleDeck is based on a patented technique - the direct way of linking air and steel.
