Development Of A Priority Ranking System For Bridge Rehabilitation And Replacement, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Vishwas G. Oka Dec 1989

Development Of A Priority Ranking System For Bridge Rehabilitation And Replacement, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Vishwas G. Oka

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The main objective of this study was to review a Bridge Priority Ranking System for Bridge Replacement developed by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Division of Maintenance. The system ranked bridges for improvement (rehabilitation or replacement) based on a benefit/cost ratio.

The system was used to rank a large data base consisting of 267 bridges. Analysis of the rankings revealed that the ranking system gave priority to bridges having low improvement costs. Many of those had low traffic volumes and subsequently, they had high costs of improvement per vehicle served.

The equation used to compute bridge deficiency points was revised. Several …

Noninteractive Macroscopic Reliability Model For Ceramic Matrix Composites With Orthotropic Material Symmetry, Stephen F. Duffy, Jane M. Manderscheid Dec 1989

Noninteractive Macroscopic Reliability Model For Ceramic Matrix Composites With Orthotropic Material Symmetry, Stephen F. Duffy, Jane M. Manderscheid

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

A macroscopic noninteractive reliability model for ceramic matrix composites is presented. The model is multiaxial and applicable to composites that can be characterized as orthotropic. Tensorial invariant theory is used to create an integrity basis with invariants that correspond to physical mechanisms related to fracture. This integrity basis is then used to construct a failure funciton per unit volume (or area) of material. It is assumed that the overall strength of the composite is governed by weakest link theory. This leads to a Weibull type model similar in nature to the principle of independent action (PIA) model for isotropic monolithic …

Investigation Of Flow Patterns In Various Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Thomas Joseph Martin Jr Nov 1989

Investigation Of Flow Patterns In Various Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Thomas Joseph Martin Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The theoretical hydraulic retention time of wastewater treatment plants is often used to predict the efficiency of treatment and to calculate operational parameters. However, these values are related to the actual hydraulic retention time. When there is a large discrepancy between the actual and predicted values, the actual hydraulic retention time can be determined by marking a parcel of wastewater and recording its passage through the system. This investigation utilized rhodamine WT, a fluorescent dye, to track the movement of wastewater through a stabilization lagoon and a rock-reed filter. The loss of rhodamine WT to sorption, biodegradation and photodegradation was …

Settlement of the foundation after column construction was observed to be approximately 9 inches as compared to the predicted total settlement of 16 inches. …

Ordination And Mapping Of Wetland Communities In Nebraska's Rainwater Basin Region, Michael C. Gilbert Nov 1989

Ordination And Mapping Of Wetland Communities In Nebraska's Rainwater Basin Region, Michael C. Gilbert

US Army Corps of Engineers

Forty-seven Rainwater Basin wetlands of south-central Nebraska were evaluated to provide information on vegetation composition, species assemblages determined from direct and indirect ordination methodology, and community characteristics derived from wetlands mapping. Vegetation/soil relationships were evaluated from both vegetational stand and mapping data. Seasonal and year to year vegetation dynamics were evaluated for one study site, Harvard Marsh.

Ordination of vegetational data was accomplished by use of weighted averaging and detrended correspondence analysis. Weighted average ordination results indicated wetland status for the Fillmore, Scott and Massie soil series. Occurrence of upland vegetation on hydric soils and wetland vegetation on non-hydric soils …
