Life Cycle Assessment Of The Us Beef Processing Through Integrated Hybrid Approach, Shaobin Li, Yuwei Qin, Jeyamkondan Subbiah, Bruce Dvorak

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Hybrid life cycle assessment (LCA) incorporating process-based and economic input-output (EIO)–based inventory data has been applied in various industries (e.g., wind energy, biofuel). Few hybrid LCA studies have been found in the food industry. This work analyzes the life cycle environmental impacts of the US beef processing industry using process-based and integrated hybrid LCA. The process-based inventory includes all resource inputs and waste outputs associated with a beef processing plant. The EIO-based inventory includes key activities missing in the process-based inventory, such as technical and management service, wood and paper, and industrial equipment. Ten environmental impact categories from TRACI v2.1 …

Nonlinear Dynamic Tests Of A Reinforced Concrete Frame Building At Different Damage Levels, Seyedsina Yousefianmoghadam, Mingming Song, Mohammad E. Mohammadi, Brittany Packard, Andreas Stavridis, Babak Moaveni, Richard L. Wood May 2020

Nonlinear Dynamic Tests Of A Reinforced Concrete Frame Building At Different Damage Levels, Seyedsina Yousefianmoghadam, Mingming Song, Mohammad E. Mohammadi, Brittany Packard, Andreas Stavridis, Babak Moaveni, Richard L. Wood

This paper discusses the dynamic tests of a two-story infilled reinforced concrete (RC) frame building using an eccentric-mass shaker. The building, located in El Centro, CA, was substantially damaged prior to the tests due to the seismic activity in the area. During the testing sequence, five infill walls were removed to introduce additional damage states and to investigate the changes in the dynamic properties and the nonlinear response of the building to the induced excitations. The accelerations and displacements of the structure under the forced and ambient vibrations were recorded through an array of sensors, while lidar scans were obtained …

Fate And Transport Of Antibiotics And Antibiotic Resistance Genes In Runoff And Soil As Affected By The Timing Of Swine Manure Slurry Application, Renys Enrique Barrios, Himanshu Khuntia, Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt, John E. Gilley, Amy M. Schmidt Schmidt, Daniel D. Snow, Xu Li Apr 2020

Fate And Transport Of Antibiotics And Antibiotic Resistance Genes In Runoff And Soil As Affected By The Timing Of Swine Manure Slurry Application, Renys Enrique Barrios, Himanshu Khuntia, Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt, John E. Gilley, Amy M. Schmidt Schmidt, Daniel D. Snow, Xu Li

Land application of swine manure slurry is a common practice to supplement nutrients to soil for crop production. This practice can introduce antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) into the environment. Field testing is critical in identifying manure management practices effective in minimizing the environmental impacts of manure-borne antibiotic and ARGs. The objective of this study was to determine how the timing of swine manure application relative to rainfall events impacts the fate and transport of antibiotics and ARGs in surface runoff and manure-amended soil. Swine manure slurry was either broadcast or injected on test plots in the field. …

A Magnetic Γ-Fe2O3@Pani@Tio2 Core–Shell Nanocomposite For Arsenic Removal Via A Coupled Visible-Light-Induced Photocatalytic Oxidation– Adsorption Process†, Yuan Wang, Ping Zhang, Tian Zhang, Gang Xiang, Xinlong Wang, Simo Pehkonen, Shaojun Yuan Mar 2020

A Magnetic Γ-Fe2O3@Pani@Tio2 Core–Shell Nanocomposite For Arsenic Removal Via A Coupled Visible-Light-Induced Photocatalytic Oxidation– Adsorption Process†, Yuan Wang, Ping Zhang, Tian Zhang, Gang Xiang, Xinlong Wang, Simo Pehkonen, Shaojun Yuan

Arsenic polluted groundwater impairs human health and poses severe threats to drinking water supplies and ecosystems. Hence, an efficient method of simultaneous oxidation of As(III) to As(V), and removal of As(V) from water has triggered increasing attention. In this study, a magnetic γ-Fe2O3 core–shell heterojunction nanocomposite was synthesized by means of hydrothermal crystallization of TiO2 on the surface of the magnetic core–shell loaded with polyaniline (γ-Fe2O3@PANI@TiO2). As an efficient photocatalyst coupled with adsorption, γ-Fe2O3@PANI@TiO2 has a high light utilization and good …

Nitrate Removal From Groundwater Using Immobilized Heterotrophic Algae, Sara Mollamohammada, Ashraf Aly Hassan, Mohamed Dahab Jan 2020

Nitrate Removal From Groundwater Using Immobilized Heterotrophic Algae, Sara Mollamohammada, Ashraf Aly Hassan, Mohamed Dahab

The treatment efficiency of Chlorella sorokiniana and Scenedesmus species, immobilized in sodium alginate, was evaluated for removing nitrate from groundwater. The experiments were performed initially in batch mode and the best-performing conditions were replicated in sequencing batch reactor mode. S. sp. showed a higher nitrate uptake in short term than C. sorokiniana. Immobilized S. sp. and C. sorokiniana cells showed 90% nitrate removal in 9 and 12 days, respectively. The optimal ratio of algal beads/water was found to be 12.5% (v:v). Comparatively, suspended S. sp. cells were able to remove only up to 35% of nitrate in 8 …

The Covid-19 Pandemic And Transportation Engineering, Chris Hendrickson,, Laurence Rilett Jan 2020

The Covid-19 Pandemic And Transportation Engineering, Chris Hendrickson,, Laurence Rilett

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic has been an enormous global disruption with immense economic, environmental, and social impacts throughout the world. Only world wars and the flu pandemic of 1918 are comparable in the wide range of consequences, including fatalities, over a relatively short period of time. Unfortunately, we can expect other major disruptions to occur in the future. In this editorial, we intend to discern some lessons for the transportation engineering profession that can be learned from the current catastrophe that can help us prepare for future disruptions. We will ignore nontransportation aspects of the pandemic such as the development of …
