Lateral Response Of Cold-Formed Steel Diaphragms With Variable Sheathing, Hernan Castaneda Oct 2022

Lateral Response Of Cold-Formed Steel Diaphragms With Variable Sheathing, Hernan Castaneda

Doctoral Dissertations

Cold-formed steel (CFS) framed buildings and subsystems have demonstrated safe and reliable performance while under lateral and seismic loads. Combined with their structural efficiency, this makes CFS-framed buildings popular choice even in high seismic zones. However, due to the complexity in response of CFS members and their interaction in subsystem and system levels, more research needs to be conducted to better understand the overstrength in the system, as well as the contribution of non-structural components to the overall response of the building. The lateral force resisting system (LFRS) of CFS framed buildings consist primarily of shear walls and diaphragms. The …

Analysis And Fate Of 2,6-Dichloro-1,4-Benzoquinone In Real And Model Drinking Waters, Aarthi Mohan

Doctoral Dissertations

For many years chlorination has served as a barrier to protect human health from waterborne disease outbreaks. Chlorine is viewed as a near-universal oxidant and disinfectant, that provides a stable residual preventing microbial re-growth all the way through the consumer’s tap. Upon reaction with natural organic matter (NOM) however, it forms disinfection by-products (DBPs) many of which are potent human carcinogens and therefore have been of research interest since the 1970’s (Froese et al., 1999; Krasner et al., 2006, 1989; Richardson, 2003; Rook, 1976, 1974; Singer, 1994). The trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) are the most prevalent (Krasner et …

Material Property Heterogeneity In Dimensional Lumber And Its Relationship To Mass Timber Performance, Fiona O'Donnell Jun 2021

Material Property Heterogeneity In Dimensional Lumber And Its Relationship To Mass Timber Performance, Fiona O'Donnell

Doctoral Dissertations

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, buildings account for 38% of the United States' carbon dioxide emissions, providing architects and structural engineers a unique opportunity to mitigate a significant factor driving climate change by implementing innovative and sustainable technology in infrastructure design. Wood and mass timber products are becoming an increasingly popular alternative building material due to their economic and environmental benefits. The natural growth of wood leads to highly heterogeneous material properties. Defects such as checks, knots, and localized slope of grain contribute to some of this variation; however, wood properties vary significantly even in clear wood. Using mass …

Cold-Formed Steel Stud Assemblies Bearing On Concrete Slabs, Abbas Joorabchian Apr 2021

Cold-Formed Steel Stud Assemblies Bearing On Concrete Slabs, Abbas Joorabchian

Doctoral Dissertations

Cold-formed steel (CFS) bearing walls are frequently installed on concrete slabs, which do not provide perfectly rigid and uniform bearing conditions. Existing design guidance assumes bearing conditions have no impact on the axial capacity, though cold-formed steel compressive members are particularly susceptible to end conditions. Studs are typically installed at the edge of concrete slabs, which is prone to spalling and geometric irregularities. Moreover, they are occasionally installed inadvertently overhanging from concrete slabs. In this research project, the impact of non-uniform and partial bearing conditions on the axial strength of cold-formed steel wall assemblies is identified and characterized experimentally and …

Investigating The Role Of Iron In The Photogranulation Phenomenon, Abeera Ayaz Ansari Dec 2020

Investigating The Role Of Iron In The Photogranulation Phenomenon, Abeera Ayaz Ansari

Doctoral Dissertations

Oxygenic photogranules (OPGs) are dense spherical microbial aggregates that are used for self-aerating wastewater treatment. Filamentous cyanobacteria are key granulating species, providing structural backbone and integrity in OPGs. Currently, the mechanisms for selecting filamentous cyanobacteria and their ability to form spherical OPGs are not well understood. Literature shows that iron (Fe) availability plays a significant role in the cyanobacterial growth and colony formation. Moreover, Fe availability is known to be dependent upon light, which is an essential growth substrate for the phototrophs. This research has investigated the role of Fe in the photogranulation phenomenon and the impact of light intensity …

Scaling Up The Oxygenic Photogranule (Opg) Wastewater Treatment Process, Joseph G. Gitau

Doctoral Dissertations

Photogranular biomass has yet to be utilized at large scale for wastewater treatment despite their potential to lower energy demand due to self-aerating capacity in addition to better process control compared to conventional technologies. An evaluation of critical driving factors affecting scaling up has yet to be undertaken. The current generation of oxygenic photogranules under hydrostatic conditions (a deviation from orthodox conditions creating other granules) limit seeding of larger reactors in time and scale. In addition, evaluating the photosynthetic productivity of granules which exist as closely commingled consortia with tightly coupled production and consumption processes, has yet to be undertaken. …

Finite Element Simulation Of Bonded And Mechanically Anchored Shear Interfaces Of Externally Applied Frp Sheets To Concrete And Wood-Concrete Composites, Alaa Al-Sammari

Doctoral Dissertations

Composite construction is prevalent in advanced structural systems where components of different materials are combined in the same structure to improve the performance of strong and economic structural sections. Maintaining continuity between the different structural components to produce monolithic structural behavior is challenging because of differences in the mechanical properties of these materials in terms of stiffness, strength, and ductility. The different components of the composite section are typically joined using adhesives and/or mechanical anchors to produce partial or full composite action. This dissertation discusses two types of shear interfaces intended to result in structural composite behavior. The first type …

Evaluation Of The Effect Of Bottom Bar Splice Location On Performance Of Beams In Reinforced Concrete Perimeter Frames, Jorge Rivera Cruz Jul 2019

Evaluation Of The Effect Of Bottom Bar Splice Location On Performance Of Beams In Reinforced Concrete Perimeter Frames, Jorge Rivera Cruz

Doctoral Dissertations

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete and Commentary (ACI 318-14) indirectly accounts for resistance to progressive collapse by providing requirements for structural integrity in concrete structures. ACI 318-14 structural integrity requirements are intended to provide alternate load paths so that progressive collapse is avoided in the event of the unintended loss of an interior support. ACI 318-14 §9.7.7.5 requires that splices of structural integrity reinforcement be designed as Class B splices near mid-span for top reinforcement and near the support for bottom reinforcement. However, ACI 318-14 does not provide a clear definition for the support …

Laboratory Study Of The Geotechnical Properties Of Abraded Railway Ballast With Natural And Clay Mix Fouling, Andrew Rohrman Jul 2019

Laboratory Study Of The Geotechnical Properties Of Abraded Railway Ballast With Natural And Clay Mix Fouling, Andrew Rohrman

Doctoral Dissertations

With 140,000 miles of active track, railroad freight is the largest method of transporting goods in the United States. An important component of the railroad substructure is the gravel-size aggregate placed below the tracks, called ballast. The ballast is responsible for draining water away from the track, resisting forces from traffic loading, maintaining track position, and reducing loads to acceptable pressures for the subgrade. Ballast is typically selected to be highly angular and uniformly graded, but these characteristics are constantly changing under dynamic traffic loading. As the ballast is loaded, the particles abrade against each other, grinding off stone dust …

A Multiline Anchor Concept For Floating Offshore Wind Turbines, Casey Fontana Mar 2019

A Multiline Anchor Concept For Floating Offshore Wind Turbines, Casey Fontana

Doctoral Dissertations

Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) hold great potential for the renewable energy industry, but capital costs remain high. In efforts to increase FOWT substructure efficiency and reduce costs, this thesis investigates a novel multiline anchor concept in which FOWTs share anchors instead of being moored separately. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate the force dynamics, design, and potential cost reduction of the system. Anchor forces are simulated using the NREL 5 MW reference turbine and OC4-DeepCwind semisubmersible platform, and multiline anchor force is computed as the vector sum of the contributing mooring line tensions. The use of a …

Modeling Performance, Cost, Delivery, And Trip Distribution Of Demand Responsive Transit Systems With Zoning, Mahour Rahimi Nov 2017

Modeling Performance, Cost, Delivery, And Trip Distribution Of Demand Responsive Transit Systems With Zoning, Mahour Rahimi

Doctoral Dissertations

Demand responsive transit (DRT) services are expensive to operate, so it is crucial to understand the factors that drive the agency costs and be able to investigate and predict the effect of possible changes in specific operating parameters as well as demand and service coverage areas on total costs. In this research, we adopt the concept of the analytical model proposed by Daganzo (1978) to present continuum approximation (CA) models that can estimate important service related factors. As the first step, we propose three analytical models to approximate the operation related variables of DRT services; Fleet Size, Vehicle Hours Traveled …

Seismic Behavior Of Concrete Frames With Jacketed Columns, Jose Alvarez Mar 2017

Seismic Behavior Of Concrete Frames With Jacketed Columns, Jose Alvarez

Doctoral Dissertations

Research on jacketed reinforced concrete (RC) columns is well established and growing. The existing studies describe the ability of jackets to rehabilitate RC columns for seismic demands. The system in the studies has proven to upgrade both strength and ductility of their unretrofitted counterparts, concentrated on repairs of deficiencies, currently in columns designed with old code provisions. These deficiencies include: low shear strength, insufficient core confinement, and short lap-splices, in particular within the plastic hinge zone. Columns with these deficiencies usually have brittle failures and cannot develop displacement ductility ( ) greater than 2. Research results on columns retrofitted with …

Proactive Assessment Of Climate Change And Contaminant Spill Impacts On Source Water Quality, Lillian C. Jeznach Nov 2016

Proactive Assessment Of Climate Change And Contaminant Spill Impacts On Source Water Quality, Lillian C. Jeznach

Doctoral Dissertations

Managing the water quality of surface drinking water sources has become an increasingly difficult task for water suppliers due to increased watershed urbanization and climate change. Changes in source water quality may affect public perceptions, treatment effectiveness, and ultimately costs to treat water to drinking standards. Although there are increased threats to current and future drinking water quality, current approaches to managing these threats are typically reactionary. Prior detailed modeling efforts of hypothetical events that may impair raw water quality allow for an understanding of constituent fate and transport, including potential maximum concentrations and travel times to the drinking water …

A Vulnerability Framework For Assessing The Risks To Water Supply Systems Under Climate Uncertainty In The Urban Northeastern United States, Sarah Whateley Mar 2016

A Vulnerability Framework For Assessing The Risks To Water Supply Systems Under Climate Uncertainty In The Urban Northeastern United States, Sarah Whateley

Doctoral Dissertations

The northeastern United States is not commonly considered a drought prone region. Yet there are increasing pressures on water utilities throughout the region that constrain their ability to supply reliable water. These include new constraints on water withdrawals and requirements to release additional water for ecological purposes. Finally, there is the emerging concern associated with climate change. The vulnerability of any particular system, however, is not easily assessed, as it is dependent on a variety of factors that go beyond simple changes in precipitation and temperature. These include the size of the watershed, the volume of storage, required releases, and …

An Analysis Of Partial-Depth, Floating, Impermeable Guidance Structures For Downstream Fish Passage At Hydroelectric Facilities, Kevin Mulligan Nov 2015

An Analysis Of Partial-Depth, Floating, Impermeable Guidance Structures For Downstream Fish Passage At Hydroelectric Facilities, Kevin Mulligan

Doctoral Dissertations

Partial-depth, impermeable guidance structures (or guide walls) are used to enhance downstream passage effectiveness at a hydroelectric facility by actively guiding fish to a safe passage route (i.e. the bypass). Guide walls have been installed in a variety of ways and, like many fish passage devices, have resulted in variable efficiency rates. Currently, the most common type of installment is a steel panel guide wall attached to a floating boom. While less utilized than other guidance structure options (e.g. louvers and bar racks), guide walls have been gaining popularity, particularly within the Northwest United States. The aim of this dissertation …

Microscopic Modeling Of Driver Behavior Based On Modifying Field Theory For Work Zone Application, Andrew L. Berthaume Mar 2015

Microscopic Modeling Of Driver Behavior Based On Modifying Field Theory For Work Zone Application, Andrew L. Berthaume

Doctoral Dissertations

Because many freeways in the U.S. and abroad are being reconstructed or rehabilitated, it becomes increasingly important to plan and design freeway work zones with the utmost in safety and efficiency. Central to the effective design of work zones is being able to understand how drivers behave as they approach and enter a work zone area. While simple and complex microscopic models have been used over the years to analyze driver behavior, most models were not designed for application in work zones and thus do not capture the interdependencies between lane-changing and car-following vehicle movements along with the drivers’ cognitive …

A Framework And Analytical Approach To Evaluate Alternative Vehicle Miles Traveled (Vmt) Fee Systems, Elizabeth V. Ebacher

Doctoral Dissertations

Since the fuel tax is a dwindling source of revenue, states need to find alternative funding sources. A vehicle miles traveled (VMT) fee has received serious consideration from a number of states and the federal government. What is missing from the VMT fee consideration is a framework for developing VMT fee systems and an analytical approach with which to study how well a proposed system conforms to the policies promulgated in the framework. This research strives to fill that void. The framework developed presents five areas of importance in VMT fee systems: 1. Revenue sufficiency; 2. Revenue stability; 3. Environmental …

Essays On The Quantification And Propagation Of Uncertainty In Climate Change Impact Assessments For Water Resource Systems, Scott Steinschneider Aug 2014

Essays On The Quantification And Propagation Of Uncertainty In Climate Change Impact Assessments For Water Resource Systems, Scott Steinschneider

Doctoral Dissertations

Sustainable water resources planning and management under climate change requires a proper treatment of uncertainties that emerge in an impacts analysis. A primary source of this uncertainty originates from the difficulties in projecting how anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions will evolve over time and influence the climate system at regional and local scales. However, other sources of uncertainty, such as errors in modeling hydrologic response to climate and the influences of internal climate variability, compound the effects of climate change uncertainty and further obscure our understanding of water resources performance under future climate conditions. This work presents an approach to quantify …
