Communities across the Midwest have experienced chronic stormwater drainage and increased flooding of roadways and structures. While adequate storm drainage seems to be lacking in many rural communities, steps can be taken to address some of the nuisance flooding that plagues many regions. Walnut Township commissioned a stormwater study that included the development of a 2D model to understand and mitigate flooding in their area.

With the help of the Lochmueller Group and the Broad Ripple Village Association, Indianapolis DPW perceptively took this opportunity to also improve pedestrian facilities and regional multi-modal connectivity by combining multiple regional projects into one construction contract. This consolidation allowed for a cohesive public message through proactive public involvement. Presenters will share how consensus was built between invested parties through a successful public and private partnership.

I-70 composite (asphalt over concrete) pavement is being rehabilitated using peel and stick membrane and geosynthetic paving fabric. The innovative rehabilitation technique is the first time peel and stick membrane is being used with geosynthetic paving fabric on the existing concrete pavement of the interstate. This combination retards reflective cracking and acts as a moisture barrier, which extends the service life of the treatment.

In 2019 a new INDOT Specification went into effect for waterproofing on concrete pipes and three- and four-sided boxes. The new specification decreased the leakage at these structures joints from 95% to less than 5%. This presentation will provide the background on why the change was needed and the solution, complete with construction examples and results.
