Past earthquakes have signaled the increased collapse vulnerability of mainshock-damaged bridge piers and urgent need of repair interventions prior to subsequent cascading hazard events, such as aftershocks, triggered by the mainshock (MS). The overarching goal of this study is to quantify the collapse vulnerability of mainshock-damaged substandard RC bridge piers rehabilitated with different repair jackets (FRP, conventional thick steel and hybrid jacket) under aftershock (AS) attacks of various intensities. The last decade has seen clarifications of the underlying capillary physics behind stimulation of oil production by seismic waves and vibrations. Computational studies have prevailed, however, and no viscous hydrodynamic theory of the phenomenon has been proposed. For a body of oil entrapped in a pore channel, viscosity effects are naturally incorporated through a model of two-phase core-annular flow. These effects are significant at the postmobilization stage, when the resistance of capillary forces is overcome and viscosity becomes the only force resisting an oil ganglion's motion. The seismic effectiveness of metallic dampers as vibration isolators and energy dissipation devices as well as the dynamic performance of high rocker bearings are investigated experimentally. The scope of the study includes optimizing the metallic dampers for maximum dissipation of energy, characterizing full-scale metallic dampers, and understanding the seismic behavior of a small-scale bridge with dampers. Three full-scale dampers, two of straight and one of linearly tapered rods, were fabricated and tested under a progressive cyclic load.
