Understanding how a bridge structure responds to various loads in a time and resource-efficient approach is vital in characterizing bridge health. Bridge health monitoring is an evaluation of the structural condition and performance, which optimizes limited transportation budgets by prioritizing the bridges that are in the most need for retrofit or replacement. Identifying and remedying issues will mitigate long-term problems and ensure that the bridge remains open to service for all legal loads. The roughness of the transition between the bridge and the roadway is a well-known issue that affects roughly 25% of the bridges in the United States. As soil underneath the approach slab settles, deferential settlement develops between the bridge and the approaching roadway. This may negatively affect the ride quality for travelers and result in substantial long-term maintenance costs. Because of the differential settlement, bumps could develop at the ends of the bridge when abrupt changes in slope (exceeding 1/125) occurs.

ABSTRACT

The long-term maintenance problems associated with expansion joints, which are used to accommodate bridge movements in conventional bridges, have been the primary motivation for the use of integral abutment (jointless) bridges. These bridges rely on the interaction between the structure and the surrounding soil to accommodate bridge movements without the use of any expansion joints on the bridge superstructure. As the bridge superstructure expands and contracts due to seasonal thermal and other strains, relatively large forces can develop in the pile near the pile-cap interface. A team of geotechnical, structural, hydraulic, environmental, and transportation experts collaborated to provide engineering solutions to the Cornhusker Council in an effort to solve the current problems facing their Outdoor Education Center. This results of this project provided the structural design of three bridges on the property, transportation plans for two parking lots and roadway design, geotechnical recommendations for soil testing and erosion prevention, and an environmental and hydraulic analysis of the property. The U.S. Congressional Research Service issued a report for Congress in May 2016, entitled” Earthquake Risk and U.S. Highway Infrastructure: Frequently Asked Questions” which highlighted the absence of a national database on the status of seismic vulnerability of bridges or other infrastructure, and thus no estimate of costs to retrofit vulnerable bridges. Low to moderate seismicity regions exist in each of the continental United States, with over 30 states having mostly or entirely low-to-moderate seismicity. Resources at state transportation agencies and municipalities are focused on higher seismicity regions, creating a gap in quantifying the system-wide seismic vulnerability despite an overall …
