Measuring Of Thermal Conductivity And Heat Capacity Of Different Papers And Heat-Sealing Process Of Papers With A Polymer Layer, Amenah Khalaf

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Packaging is an important and safe way to protect our food and other things through transportation, but the use of plastic based packaging is causing issues with plastic pollution. To replace plastic packaging with a paper-based option that has a barrier coating, good heat sealing will be needed to be a drop-in replacement. While much as been studied on the heat sealing of polymer layers, little has been reported around the heat sealing of paper that has a polymeric barrier coating.

Experiments were conducted to characterize the thermal conductivity and heat capacity of paper as a function of press pressure …

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Polymer Nanocomposites In Extreme Environments, Farzin Rahmani Jan 2018

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Polymer Nanocomposites In Extreme Environments, Farzin Rahmani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, lower length scale phenomena associated with the responses of hybrid materials to harsh and extreme environments were studied. The goal of this research was to reveal the underlying mechanisms of damage mitigation in these materials and the role that interface, and relevant material component interactions play in the overall material response. First, the thermal decomposition behavior of a technologically important material system, i.e., pristine graphene (PG) and graphene oxide (GO) reinforced poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), was investigated using a reactive molecular dynamics simulation methodology. The simulations were performed in both non-isothermal (dynamic gravimetric) and isothermal modes of decomposition. …

Creating Renewable Tunable Polymers From Hydroxymethylfurfural, Meredith C. Allen Aug 2017

Creating Renewable Tunable Polymers From Hydroxymethylfurfural, Meredith C. Allen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The research here deals with the conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into a tunable polymer. HMF is a known derivative that can be acquired from biomass via hydrolysis of cellulose followed by isomerization and finally selective dehydration. The process considered here is being developed to create tunable polymers from HMF and involves several different steps, three of which are covered here. The first step, an etherification, is the reaction of HMF with an alcohol. This step is significant because in this step the R-group from the alcohol is added to HMF and the branching portion formed is carried over to the …

Effect Of High Cationic Flocculant On Anaerobic Digestion Of Municipal Wastewater., Prathap D. John May 2017

Effect Of High Cationic Flocculant On Anaerobic Digestion Of Municipal Wastewater., Prathap D. John

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of municipal sludge is a widely used stabilization process at municipal wastewater treatment plants. It is highly effective in reducing sludge volume and produces methane gas which is used as fuel in the wastewater plant. Following digestion sludge is sent to a centrifuge to separate the solids from the liquids. Louisville MSD adds flocculent to material in the centrifuge to better coagulate the solids, thereby aiding in separation of the solids from the liquids. The potential for further AD, COD reduction, and methane generation of the liquid effluent from the centrifuge was unknown, particularly in regards to …
