A Molecular Investigation Of Absorption Onto Mineral Pigments, Brian J. Ninness Dec 2001

A Molecular Investigation Of Absorption Onto Mineral Pigments, Brian J. Ninness

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pigment suspensions are important in several processes such as ceramics, paints, inks, and coatings. In the wet state, pigments are combined with a variety of chemical species such as polymers, surfactants, and polyelectrolytes which produce a complex colloidal system. The adsorption, desorption, and redistribution of these species at the pigment - aqueous solution interface can have an impact on the behavior in both the wet state or its final dried state. The goal of this work is to establish a molecular picture of the adsorption properties of these pigmented systems. A novel in situ infrared technique has been developed which …

Influence Of Viscoelasticity On The Nano-Micromechanical Behavior Of Latex Films And Pigmented Coatings, Manish Giri Aug 2001

Influence Of Viscoelasticity On The Nano-Micromechanical Behavior Of Latex Films And Pigmented Coatings, Manish Giri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nan0 to microscale deformation behavior of different carboxylated styrene-butadiene co- polymer Latexes were investigated using a commercial nanoindentation device. The latexes dif- fered primarily in their glass transition temperature (Tg). The bulk dynamic rheological properties, as determined from a rheometer, dictate the axismmetric deformation behavior of the latexes. Results from dynamic tests performed on latexes were analyzed using the theories in contact and fracture mechanics. Two theories of linear viscoelastic fracture mechanics (LVEFM) were employed to model the adhesion hysteresis (loading-unloading cycle) curves to obtain meaningful cohesive zone (fracture process zone) parameters and a stress intensity functional ( …

The Viscoelastic Behavior Of Pigmented Latex Coating Films, Katharina Prall Dec 2000

The Viscoelastic Behavior Of Pigmented Latex Coating Films, Katharina Prall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The mechanical properties of paper coatings are essential for use performance of coated paper (e.g. calendering, printing degradation during printing operations, pick). This study investigates the microscopic and macroscopic mechanisms that determine the viscoelastic behavior of pigmented latex coating films. Pigmented coating layers were prepared with different microstructures. This was achieved by using different pigment types and shapes (polystyrene plastic pigment - spheres, precipitated calcium carbonate - rhombs, clay - plates), and changing pigment volume concentration (PVC). Two styrene-butadiene latices with different degree of carboxylation (acidic level 0.3% and 4.5%) were evaluated to determine effect of adhesion. The viscoelastic material …

Improved Techniques For Washing Iron Blue Suspensions : Ii. The Preparation Of O, O'-Dichlorobenzidine From O-Chloronitrobenzene., Marvin L. Gernert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I. IMPROVED TECHNIQUES FOR WASHING IRON BLUE SUSPENSIONS

The investigation of several procedures for the speeding of the washing of iron blue suspensions to remove electrolytes is reported. The use of several techniques to coagulate blue particles in the colloidal range to cause more rapid settling was found to be of little value. A conventional Oliver filter and centrifugal clarifier were found to be unsatisfactory for clearing iron blue suspensions. Considerable advantage in washing by settling and decantation was obtained with the settling of the blue suspensions in relatively shallow vessels. A continuous washing procedure was developed whereby the blue …
