Evaluating The Effects Of Granulated Rubber And Glass Fibers In Polymer Concrete As A Structural Material For Wafer Grinding Machines, Kevin Gabriel Kuehn, Philip Randall Streeter Jun 2022

Evaluating The Effects Of Granulated Rubber And Glass Fibers In Polymer Concrete As A Structural Material For Wafer Grinding Machines, Kevin Gabriel Kuehn, Philip Randall Streeter

Materials Engineering

Polymer concrete is a composite material used to replace cast iron and steel in wafer grinding machines for vibration damping. During the grinding and lapping processes of manufacturing silicon wafers, excessive vibrations may cause subsurface damage which requires additional polishing and reduces yield. Nine compositions containing various levels of granulated rubber and glass fibers were manufactured. CRM WRF-10 granulated rubber was examined at 0%, 5%, and 10% and Corning Cem-Fil glass fibers were added at 0%, 0.5%, and 1% by weight. Smooth-On EpoxAcast 690 epoxy resin was held constant at 16% for each composition. Crushed granite aggregate from Martin Marietta, …

Investigation Of Ceramic Firing Processes For Investment Casting Shell Molds, Leonardo Ken Hoaakua Nakamura, Rileigh Anne Cotter Jun 2020

Investigation Of Ceramic Firing Processes For Investment Casting Shell Molds, Leonardo Ken Hoaakua Nakamura, Rileigh Anne Cotter

Materials Engineering

PCC Structurals aims to improve the quality and consistency of their ceramic mold production for their investment casting processes to decrease product loss figures. Although their current production processes result in acceptable quantities of high-quality molds, a significant percentage of defective molds are produced. These defective molds cause appreciable product loss due to casting defects and mold failure. Available literature dictates that high-quality investment casting molds must exhibit fracture strengths within a desired range in order to perform adequately. However, information regarding specific firing procedures which consistently result in ceramic mold strengths within this range is not readily available. To …

Erosion Resistance Of Tungsten-Carbide Coatings For Steel Pipes In Fluid Catalytic Cracking Units, Davis Vannasing, Jennifer Hulfachor Jun 2019

Erosion Resistance Of Tungsten-Carbide Coatings For Steel Pipes In Fluid Catalytic Cracking Units, Davis Vannasing, Jennifer Hulfachor

Materials Engineering

In petroleum processing, the flow of catalyst readily leads to erosion of piping in a fluid catalytic cracking unit. Advances in coating materials and processes necessitate a re-evaluation of current protection methods. Commercially available tungsten-carbide (WC) claddings and nanostructured WC-W CVD coatings were investigated as potential alternative erosion-resistant coatings. Erosion tests by solid particle impingement were conducted on 2 variations of claddings and 1 variation of WC-W coatings following ASTM standard G76. A36 steel coupons were used as reference samples. For statistical validation, 2-3 replications of the tests were performed for the claddings and WC-W coating. Testing was conducted using …

Investigation Of Copper Infiltration Alloys For Use In Metal Matrix Composite Drill Bits, Samuel J. Stueland, Timothy P. Markiewicz Jun 2019

Investigation Of Copper Infiltration Alloys For Use In Metal Matrix Composite Drill Bits, Samuel J. Stueland, Timothy P. Markiewicz

Materials Engineering

A newly developed copper-based alloy, P98-X1 was tested for compressive strength to predict qualitative performance compared to MF53, F-Bronze, CuNiSn, and CuMnNi for use as the infiltration alloy in metal matrix composite (MMC) drill bits. Ingots of each alloy were cast using an arc furnace and cut into compression testing samples using wire electrical discharge machining (EDM). The alloys were selected for testing based on solid solution strengthening coefficient and melting point. Five of each alloy were compression tested to determine yield strength of the infiltration alloy. Yield strength was determined using a 0.002mm displacement offset from the linear elastic …

Tensile Test Design To Measure Interlayer Adhesion In Investment Casting Shells For Spalling Mitigation, Shelby Boyd, Alex Miller, Jameson Senger Jun 2015

Tensile Test Design To Measure Interlayer Adhesion In Investment Casting Shells For Spalling Mitigation, Shelby Boyd, Alex Miller, Jameson Senger

Materials Engineering

We designed a tensile test fixture for a 112 lbf capacity Instron load frame that imparts a normal force on the face of a button epoxied to an investment casting shell sample, delaminating the shell area attached to the button. Using a green standard shell (Group 1), a partially fired standard shell (Group 2), and a green shell with a different third coat (Group 3), we verified that the fixture can measure differences in strength between sample groups. We attached steel buttons to leveled samples with 0.05 mL of Hysol-Loctite 9340 epoxy, let it cure for 48 hours, and tested …

Material Composition And Toxicology Of Cosmetic Products, Hilda Gonzalez Jun 2014

Material Composition And Toxicology Of Cosmetic Products, Hilda Gonzalez

Materials Engineering

In today’s modern society, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates many industries to protect consumers’ health; the cosmetics industry is not one of them. Through self-regulation, companies continue to sell products for topical use on the body that have been known to contain toxic chemicals with little to no testing on the effects they have on the human body. The purpose of this project was to determine the content of such known toxins in five different brands of face powders. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) was used to verify the primary component and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emissions Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was used …

Fabricating Replacement Glass Prisms For The Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, Daniel Garcken Jun 2012

Fabricating Replacement Glass Prisms For The Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, Daniel Garcken

Materials Engineering

The objective of this project was to design and create a process for manufacturing replacement glass prisms for the Piedras Blancas lighthouse and several other lighthouses nationwide. The prisms were designed to be in multiple metal arrays spread across the floor of the beacon room (the topmost room of the lighthouses). The prisms functioned to transmit extra, radiant light from the beacon light through the floor of the beacon room and disperse it into the maintenance room below. Using computer aided drafting (CAD) software, an original prism was measured and modeled; the corresponding mold was also modeled. G-codes for controlling …

Characterization Of The Oxidation Kinetics Of Fecral Ferritic Stainless Steels At 900°C For Catalytic Converter Applications, Stacy Stamm Jun 2011

Characterization Of The Oxidation Kinetics Of Fecral Ferritic Stainless Steels At 900°C For Catalytic Converter Applications, Stacy Stamm

Materials Engineering

This study characterized the oxidation kinetics of two types of ferritic stainless steel foils used as substrates for catalytic converters. Catalytic converters rely on an alumina layer on the surface of the foils, which allows the catalyst to attach to the substrate. Because the alumina layer is so important, this study characterized the weight gain, thickness, and composition of the alumina as it grew at 900°C for up to 400 hours. The two foils characterized were an MK foil, used for gasoline engines, and an EMS foil, used for diesel engines. The MK foil showed a percent weight gain of …

Characterization Of Aluminum-Boron Carbide Particulate Metal Matrix Composites, Eric Blank Jun 2010

Characterization Of Aluminum-Boron Carbide Particulate Metal Matrix Composites, Eric Blank

Materials Engineering

The analysis of die-cast 380 aluminum-boron carbide particulate metal matrix composites (MMC) was performed in order to see if the samples had the required tensile strength of 300 MPa. 10wt% B4C die-cast samples were produced and tested. Half were heat treated to the T6 condition and the others were left as cast. Using ASTM standard B 557M it was found that the average tensile strength for the as-cast samples was 130 MPa and the heat treated samples had a tensile strength of 93 MPa. These values were both lower than expected. The heat treated samples were not expected to have …
