Hydrodynamics characterization in terms of flow regime behavior is a crucial task to enhance the design of bubble column reactors and scaling up related methodologies. This review presents recent studies on the typical flow regimes established in bubble columns. Some effort is also provided to introduce relevant definitions pertaining to this field, namely, that of "void fraction" and related (local, chordal, cross-sectional and volumetric) variants. Experimental studies involving different parameters that affect design and operating conditions are also discussed in detail. In the second part of the review, the attention is shifted to cases with internals of various types (perforated …

The Four-Point Optical Probe is Applied in a Bubble Column with an Air-Water System to Investigate the Bubble Properties (Local Gas Holdup, Velocity, Chord Length, Specific Interfacial Area, and Frequency) over a Range of Gas Superficial Velocities. Both Bubbles Moving Upward and Downward Are Recorded and Measured as Opposed to Only Upward Bubbles Measured and Reported in Other Studies Involving Probes. the Probe Worked Efficiently in Both Bubbly Flow and Highly Churn-Turbulent Flow at Very High Superficial Gas Velocities. Bubble Properties at the Conditions of Churn-Turbulent Flow Are Obtained and Investigated for the First Time. the Changes in the Bubble …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Time-Averaged Local Heat Transfer Coefficients Were Studied in a 0.16 M Inner Diameter High-Pressure Air-Water Bubble Column. the Effects of the Superficial Gas Velocity (Up to 0.30 M/s), Pressure (Up to 10 Bar), Probe Position, and Probe Orientation Were Investigated. the Heat Transfer Coefficients Increased with Superficial Gas Velocity, and the Values in the Center of the Column Were 9-16% Greater Than Those Near the Wall Region under Atmospheric Pressure (1 Bar). with the Increase in Pressure, the Heat Transfer Coefficients Decreased Due to Combined Effects of Bubble Size Decreasing, Gas Holdup Increasing, and Bubble Number Increasing. the Heat Transfer …

Photosynthetic Algal Cultures Are a Potential Source of Many High-Value Products. in Photobioreactors (PBR), the Availability and the Intensity of the Light, Which Are Affected by the Cells' Movement, Are the Major Factors Controlling the Biomass Productivity. Hydrodynamics, Hence, Play a Significant Role in the Reactor's Performance, as They Determine Not Only the Flow Field, I.e. Liquid Flow and Mixing, Shear Stresses, Etc., But Also the Movements of the Cells. in This Work, Computer-Automated Radioactive Particle Tracking (CARPT) Technique Was Employed to Evaluate its Feasibility for Characterizing PBRs. By Conducting an Analysis of the Measurement Errors It Was Found that Bubble Dynamics Obtained by Two-Point Probes Can Be Highly Inaccurate. a Four-Point Optical Probe with Appropriate Data Processing Algorithm Has Been Developed So that the Bubble Velocity Vector Can Be Obtained. This Probe Provides Directly the Value of Specific Gas-Liquid Interfacial Area. However, for Obtaining Accurate Values of Bubble Velocity and Size, the Four-Point Probe Must Be Calibrated by a CCD Camera at the Same Conditions. Calibration Columns Have Been Developed for This Purpose Where the Bubble Size and Velocity Can Be Varied to Calibrate the Measurements by …
