How Advancements In Aerodynamics Improves The Performance Of Formula 1 Racecars, Joshua Fields

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to review how knowledge of aerodynamics improved the performance of Formula 1 racing cars since the beginnings of Formula 1 racing after World War II. Formula 1 racing places each competitive team on a similar level in regulating the cars to be safe while driving above 350 kph. This paper begins with how Formula 1 racing began and how race cars were designed and looked. Then each decade of racing will be discussed and remarks on major advancements and changes in aerodynamics. Also some computational fluid dynamics (CFD) will also be discussed on how …

Propulsion And P.I Control Systems For Sae Aircraft, Ervin Meneses Jun 2015

Propulsion And P.I Control Systems For Sae Aircraft, Ervin Meneses

Honors Theses

This thesis analyzes the integration and performance of a P.I control system within the SAE Aero Design Competition aircraft. This year the Union College Aero Design team will be competing in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aero Design “Regular Class” Competition, which encompasses the design and production of a large‐scale remote controlled aircraft that must meet predetermined power and size constraints. The overall objective of the competition is to have the designed aircraft carry a maximum amount weight within a 200 feet runway while staying below a 1000W power limit. Each competitor must integrate a power limiter into their …

Cfd Modeling Of The Flow Of Resin Into A Preform Mold Of Carbon Fibers, Caelan Lapointe Jun 2015

Cfd Modeling Of The Flow Of Resin Into A Preform Mold Of Carbon Fibers, Caelan Lapointe

Honors Theses

Sandwich structures are formed by separating load bearing face sheets with a light weight core material. This type of structural design is both strong and light, making for an extremely efficient structure. Sustainable sandwich structures made using face sheets of natural fiber mats and natural oil based resins separated by a fungal mycelia core. The vacuum infusion of resin into the fiber mats is investigated numerically using Star CCM+, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package. The methodology focuses on ease of use while emphasizing good modeling practices. The models generated are compared to the experimental results and provide a theoretical …
