Attempts to reduce jet noise began some 70 years ago. In the literature, there have been many publications written on this topic. By now, it is common knowledge that jet noise consists of a number of components. They possess different spectral and radiation characteristics and are generated by different mechanisms. It appears then that one may aim at the suppression of the noise of a single component instead of trying to reduce jet noise overall. On The Implementation And Further Validation Of A Time Domain Boundary Element Method Broadband Impedance Boundary Condition, Fang Q. Hu, Douglas M. Nark

A time domain boundary integral equation with Burton-Miller reformulation is presented for acoustic scattering by surfaces with liners in a uniform mean flow. The Ingard-Myers impedance boundary condition is implemented using a broadband multipole impedance model and converted into time domain differential equations to augment the boundary integral equation. The coupled integral-differential equations are solved numerically by a March-On-in-Time (MOT) scheme. While the Ingard-Myers condition is known to support Kelvin-Helmholtz instability due to its use of a vortex sheet interface between the flow and the liner surface, it is found that by neglecting a second derivative term in the current …

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is one of the most popular proposed solutions for alleviating traffic problems in populated areas. In this context, the proposed types of vehicles mainly consist of rotors and propellers powered by electric motors. However, those rotary-wing components can contribute excessively to noise generation. Therefore, a significant noise concern emerges due to urban air vehicles in or around residential areas. Reducing noise emitted by air vehicles is critically important to improve public acceptance of such vehicles for operations in densely populated areas.

In recent years, small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have increased in availability and use in both public and commercial sectors. This increased use of small UAVs or “drones” has the unfortunate consequence of introducing excessive noise into communities where they operate. Implementation of noise reduction methods is necessary if we wish to see expanded use of drones in public areas. With electric propulsion, the primary source of noise is the rotor/propeller used in contemporary multi-rotor configurations. In this thesis, the aerodynamics and acoustic behavior of various swept propellers is examined with computational and experimental methods.

Reducing aircraft noise is a major objective in the field of computational aeroacoustics. When designing next generation quiet aircraft, it is important to be able to accurately and efficiently predict the acoustic scattering by an aircraft body from a given noise source. Acoustic liners are an effective tool for achieving aircraft noise reduction and are characterized by a frequency-dependent impedance value. Converted into the time-domain using Fourier transforms, an impedance boundary condition can be used to simulate the acoustic wave scattering by geometric bodies treated with acoustic liners. Screech noise exists only in imperfectly expanded jets. The exit pressure of imperfectly expanded jets does not match ambient pressure, so expansion or compression waves appear out of the nozzle and generate shock cell patterns. Screech is generated by the interaction of shock cells and instability waves. Many experiments and computations have been done to model screech noise, but it is not yet a very well known subject.
