Hypersonic vehicles are subjected to an extreme aerothermodynamic environment dominated by intense thermal loading which is amplified further when the local boundary layer state transitions from a laminar to a turbulent state. Due to weight and complexity considerations, it is not feasible to incorporate thermal protection systems (TPS) over an entire hypersonic body. The Hypersonic International Flight Research Experimentation (HIFiRE) program explores and advances hypersonic aerospace systems by developing a multitude of test flight geometries and conducting experimental test flights to obtain data for use in validation of computational models and results. Recent work at the University of Tennessee Space Institute has demonstrated that the resonant behavior observed in the spectra of cylinder- and blunt-fin-generated XSBLIs is connected to fundamental fluid mechanisms within the boundary layer. Therefore, a test campaign was conducted to characterize the fundamental mechanisms that drive the low-frequency unsteadiness in cylinder- and blunt-fin-generated shockwave-boundary layer interactions, specifically shockwave-boundary layer interactions in which the incoming boundary layer is undergoing a laminar-to-turbulent transition. Scramjet engines are key for sustained hypersonic flights. Analytic models play a critical role in the preliminary design of a scramjet engine configuration. The objective of this research is to develop and validate a quasi-1D model for the scramjet engine encompassing inlet, isolator and combustor, to evaluate the impact of flight conditions and design parameters on the engine functionality. In this research a new configuration of linear array-focused laser differential interferometry (LA-FLDI) is described. This measurement expands on previous implementations of LA-FLDI through the use of an additional Wollaston prism. This additional prism expands the typical single LA-FLDI column into two columns of FLDI point pairs. The additional column of probed locations allows for increased spatial sampling of frequency spectra as well as the addition of simultaneous wall normal velocimetry measurements. The objectives of this study were to provide time-resolved (1) characterizations of shock wave/transitional boundary layer interactions using schlieren flow visualization, and (2) correlations of unsteady shock motion to boundary layer features. The characteristics of cylinder-induced shock wave/transitional boundary layer interactions in a Mach 2 freestream flowfield were studied experimentally. The Reynolds number in the Mach 2 facility was 30,000,000 m-1. Incoming boundary layers were in transitional and fully turbulent states. Characterizing the shock wave motion was based on tracking the position of the shock wave on the model surface in schlieren images. The motion of the shock waves revealed …

“This study describes the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes to simulate hypersonic boundary layers using several different turbulent closure models and comparing Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations against Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of similar test cases. The test cases in this study consist of a flat plate in a Mach 8 freestream with a zero pressure gradient and wall recovery ratio of 0.48, as well as a Mach 8 axisymmetric nozzle also with a cold wall. The RANS models used in this study are the Spalart-Allmaras model, Baldwin-Lomax model, Menter K-Omega Baseline and Menter K-Omega Shear Stress Transport models. …

The current resurgence of interest in hypersonic technologies has warranted an inquiry into the commonly employed thermochemical non-equilibrium models within computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. Additionally, research has historically focused on forebody flowfields, while studies of the complex wake structure have remained elusive. Although the forebody is of significance for vehicle analysis, the wake presents many exploitative characteristics. This dissertation aimed to address these two deficits. First, two three-temperature non-equilibrium models were developed, increasing the fidelity of hypersonic solutions above that of the legacy two-temperature model. This study aims to numerically simulate the wind tunnel results for hypersonic flow over a circular cone of semi-apex angle of 10 degrees yawed from 0° to 20° using the commercial computational fluid dynamics software ANSYS Fluent. The ANSYS workbench is used to create the 10° semi-apex circular cone with a shock aligned structured mesh of 3.05 million cells surrounding the cone. Simulation boundary conditions for pressure and temperature in the far field correspond to Tracy’s wind tunnel experiment at Cal Tech. The effect of thermal and chemical boundary conditions on the structure and chemical composition of the wake behind a 3D Mach 7 sphere-cone at an angle of attack of 5 degrees and an altitude of roughly 30,000 m is explored. A special emphasis is placed on determining the number density of chemical species which might lead to detection via the electromagnetic spectrum. A weakly ionized hypersonic flow solver for the simulation of reentry flow is firstly developed at the University of Kentucky. This code is the fluid dynamics module of known as Kentucky Aerothermodynamics and Thermal Response System (KATS). The solver uses a second-order finite volume approach to solve the laminar Navier– Stokes equations, species mass conservation and energy balance equations for flow in chemical and thermal non-equilibrium state, and a fully implicit first-order backward Euler method for the time integration. A numerical analysis was conducted to study the effects of geometrically scaling scramjet inlet-combustor isolators. Three-dimensional fully viscous numerical simulation of the flow inside constant area rectangular ducts, with a downstream back pressure condition, was analyzed using the SolidWorks Flow Simulation software. The baseline, or 1X, isolator configuration has a 1” x 2.67” cross section and 20” length. This baseline configuration was scaled up based on the 1X configuration mass flow to 10X and 100X configurations, with ten and one hundred times the mass flow rate, respectively. An automated computer simulation of the two-dimensional planar Cal Poly Supersonic Ejector test rig is developed. The purpose of the simulation is to identify the operating conditions which produce the saturated, Fabri choke and Fabri block aerodynamic flow patterns. The effect of primary to secondary stagnation pressure ratio on the efficiency of the ejector operation is measured using the entrainment ratio which is the secondary to primary mass flow ratio.

The flow field about the nose section of a hypervelocity test sled is computed using computational fluid dynamics. The numerical model of the test sled corresponds to the Nike O/U narrow gage sled used in the upgrade program at the High Speed Test Track facility, Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico. The high temperatures and pressures resulting from the aerodynamic heating and loading affect the sled structure and the performance of the vehicle. Relative-moving boundary problems have a wide variety of applications. They appear in staging during a launch process, store separation from a military aircraft, rotor-stator interaction in turbomachinery, and dynamic aeroelasticity.

The dynamic unstructured technology (DUT) is potentially a strong approach to simulate unsteady flows around relative-moving bodies, by solving time-dependent governing equations. The dual-time stepping scheme is implemented to improve its efficiency while not compromising the accuracy of solutions.
