Students are being required to assimilate more types of information, in multiple formats, and to do so in a more efficient manner than in previous decades. These students are digital natives who need to develop 21st century skills in core subjects including reading . Our focus will be on strategies to assist students as they develop new literacies in reading for the 21st century through visual literacy.

This paper attempts to analyse the evolving relationship between economic growth and human development for 28 major Indian states during four time periods ranging over the last two decades, viz. 1983, 1993, 1999-2000 and 2004-05. The objective of this exercise is to understand whether per capita income (as an indicator of economic growth) is influenced by human development and vice versa across Indian states. The National Human Development Report 2001 methodology has been applied for constructing the Human Development Index (HDI) for the Indian states.
