Justice Through Practice: Inquiry On The Development Of Preservice Teachers’ Teaching For Social Justice, Bethany Silva, Elyse L. Hambacher, Ruth Wharton-Mcdonald

This article reports on a collaboration among three teacher educators to facilitate pre-service teacher (PST)s’ equity literacy through a social-justice themed afterschool program for elementary-aged children that was embedded in PSTs’ coursework. The teacher educators engaged in practitioner inquiry (e.g., Anderson, Herr, & Nihlen, 2007; Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 2009), posing the question, “What happens when preservice teachers use justice-oriented children’s literature to facilitate discussions about inequity with young children?” We used inductive analysis (Miles, Huberman, & Saldaña, 2014) to observe themes across 17 PSTs’ written and videotaped reflections, collected over two semesters. Most colleges and universities with teacher training programs have collections of children's books. In many cases, the librarians who are responsible for selecting these books have a number of other responsibilities as well. The workshop for which this bibliography was prepared was designed for those busy librarians who are not always able to devote the time they would like to the selection of children’s books. It explored selected “best” picture books published during 2010 and 2011.

In many cases, the librarians who are responsible for selecting these books have a number of other responsibilities as well. This workshop, designed for those busy librarians who are not always able to devote the time they would like to the selection of children’s books, will explore selected “best” picture books published during 2006 and 2007. Correlations to curricular content areas will be mentioned when applicable, and a bibliography will be provided.
