Among the many challenges of professional (faculty, administration, and staff) development is the implementation of shared governance. We propose a model involving professional learning communities that we are experimenting with in our College of Education. This new model provides faculty with decision-making power, a sense of cooperation and communication with the administration, compensation for their effort, a budget, and a large dose of satisfaction. Furthermore, this model could be effectively transferred to other university units.

Many of our students are first generation and work full time. Our poster will illustrate the use of video presence to allow students to: virtually meet with faculty; participate in group projects from six locations; learn research strategies; develop better communication skills to become better speakers by using face-to-face interact ion. Students connect with alumni in the field sharing real-time work experiences. Significant savings have been realized across campus with online interviewing using this technology.

In this qualitative study, I explore preservice teachers’ perspectives on case study assignments. Students found the case studies a means for connecting theory to practice, since they focused on successful teaching practices. The process of sharing case study responses with classmates was instrumental and deepened students’ understanding of various theoretical concepts. I argue that a systematic inquiry into the process of learning through case studies is needed beyond discussing their effectiveness compared to traditional teaching.

This study strove for the application of inquiry based learning based on the principles of a constructive classroom environment versus traditional teaching where the learners are silenced and only interacting with their teacher. The results indicated that when given the chance and support, culturally and linguistically diverse children can better utilize their abilities through the opportunities that the inquiry based learning provides such as independent and group learning processes, role taking, and having more choices.

Why should students spend time navigating to find the library tools needed to search? Why not provide direct links to library resources so more time is spent finding, evaluating, and synthesizing information? These were questions asked by some academic librarians trying to help students locate resources for assignments. As a result, these academic librarians created online tutorials for using persistent links to library resources. Teaching faculty learned how to use the links in web pages and WebCT Vista. These tutorials were also shared at conferences. Attendees encouraged the presenters to develop a hands-on workshop. Attendees also suggested the workshop as …

Ya Me Fui! When English Learners Consider Leaving School, Jeanmarie Hamilton Boone
Jeanmarie Hamilton Boone
This study examines narratives of English learners who have either dropped out or considered dropping out as a result of their experience in high school. This research seeks to determine at which point students left or considered leaving school, which often goes undetected in traditional quantitative data collection methods. The common themes that emerged in these narratives are examined in light of existing research. Researchers have suggested the following reasons English learners leave high school before earning a high school diploma: employment, limited English skills, disciplinary problems, poor grades, and not feeling a “sense of belonging” to the school. The …

Southern Civility, Sexuality and Secularity: Minority Politics in True Blood. Paper Topic area: Science Fiction and Fantasy - True Blood (Burnett) In the popular HBO series True Blood and the novels by Charlaine Harris on which they are based, Sookie Stackhouse is a thoroughly postmodern Southern Belle. Sookie’s decisions are based on her notions of what it is to be a ‘lady’ and on her Christian beliefs. She is directly contrasted with members of the Fellowship of the Sun in that she refuses to believe that Jesus would hate vampires. The viewer is thus implicitly invited to become a resistant …

The number of workers with disabilities is expected to increase substantially within the next few years, particularly with the return of veterans wounded in combat. The increase in training programs that are delivered online requires that accessibility features be put in place to accommodate this group of workers. The purpose of this interactive session is to demonstrate techniques that enhance accessibility of online training materials via a "makeover" of an existing online course.

Having assumed the role of academic tourist/midnight robber from the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago, I discover that I have never fully dealt with the emotional aspect of using academic discourses that came out of a Eurocentric frame. Academic habitus, conventions, laws, shame, guilt, and fear of the repercussions because of my dual status inhibit me. In this autoethnographic text, I make a bold move to become vulnerable as I critically explore the social, political, and cultural contexts of a dissertation culture that I experienced. I use methodological tools provided by specifically chosen tour guides, Carnival midnight robber talk, …
