An Integration Of Chemistry, Biology, And Physics: The Interdisciplinary Laboratory, Gerald R. Van Hecke, Kerry K. Karukstis, Richard C. Haskell, Catherine S. Mcfadden, F Sheldon Wettack

As a new venture to integrate research and education, a pilot section of a first-year laboratory sequence known as the Interdisciplinary Laboratory (ID Lab) was introduced on the Harvey Mudd campus during the 1999–2000 academic year and continues to be offered. The ID Lab attempts to bridge laboratory experiences from biology, chemistry, and physics for the first-year student. Taught by a team of faculty from these disciplines, the course seeks both to illustrate commonality of investigative methods and laboratory techniques in these sciences and to introduce discipline-specific principles. This presentation introduces the Peer Review of Teaching project for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The faculty fellowship program is described and the process by which faculty create course portfolios is explained. How portfolios are used for formative and summative assessment are discussed.

Even though homeschooling is not a new concept, it was a relatively small movement until 30 years ago. By the late 1990's, there were over a million students being homeschooled in the United States and the numbers seem to be growing quickly. Homeschooling has become a viable alternative to traditional education. No longer a peripheral movement, it now reflects the diversity of American society. Even though homeschooling is receiving increased attention in the popular press, there is a paucity of research on the subject (Knowles, 1988). Defending The Jackson Purchase: The History Of Camp Beauregard, Kentucky, Dieter C. Ullrich

The series of events that led to the creation of Camp Beauregard was initiated on September 3, 1861, as Confederate forces under Brigadier General Gideon Pillow entered Kentucky from Tennessee to secure the riverport cities of Hickman and Columbus. In response, Union forces under Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant crossed the Ohio River and seized Paducah on September 6. The following day Confederate Major General Leonidas Polk issued orders to organize troops into field brigades in preparation for a Union advance upon Columbus. For the next two weeks both sides began to build earthworks and position artillery to fortify their …

The experiences of a prisoner detained at Camp Dent, a Union prison camp in Louisville, have been found in the faded pages of a long-forgotten diary. Five years ago, an alumnus of the University of Tennessee at Martin donated two diaries, several letters, and a cracked ambrotype of a relative, Private Van Buren Oldham, who fought in the Civil War. For over one hundred and thirty years the donor's family had kept these records in an old tin box, passing it on from generation to generation. In the spring of 1996 the great-grandson of Private Van Buren Oldham gave these …

This chapter presents a model for a comprehensive program review process that can be used on any campus. Faculty developers maintain a critical role in a campus-wide program review initiative. This model is based upon the development of institutional priorities that guide the development of goals and objectives far academic units across the campus. The program review process is based on a core of regularly produced institutional data that can be used by all units to inform decision-making. The review process is conducted on an annual or biannual basis with periodic major review coinciding with accreditation visits. The ultimate success …

Harnessing The Potential Of Online Faculty Development: Challenges And Opportunities, Timothy P. Shea, Pamela D. Sherer, Eric V. Kristensen
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
This chapter explores several issues regarding the current state of online faculty development resources. First, it describes the breadth and depth of today’s online teaching and learning resources. Then, it explains the benefits of designing an institutional teaching and learning center portal as a means for organizing and focusing resources. Finally, it discusses the importance of the faculty developer’s role in harnessing these resources for individual and institutional advantage. The online portal provides a powerful tool for institutional change on a scale heretofore impossible for most, and puts faculty development at the center of an institution’s mission.
