A Child Of Books: Building Little Free Libraries With Student Partners In Teaching And Learning, Hayley Hoffman

The lack of equitable access to books for children has a lifelong impact on their literacy development. Pop-up libraries, such as the popular Little Free Libraries, are intended to address this divide by providing access to books year-round. Drawing from the author’s previous experience with the project, this essay explores the ways in which building a Little Free Library as a class can allow students at various grade levels to act as partners in teaching and learning.

Due to impending campus-wide downsizing, the Grand Valley State University (GVSU) Libraries projected that a worst-case scenario would result in a 14% cut to the library’s collections budget for fiscal year 2020. In the same year, GVSU Libraries welcomed several new members of its leadership team, including the dean, two associate deans, head of systems, head of collections, business administrator, and a vacancy after the long-time acquisitions manager retired. Budget cuts and staff turnover are tough, but they prompted a much-needed reassessment of roles, culture, and priorities in the library. To anticipate the evolving needs of our audience we also need to hear from the individual users themselves. Information literacy has become a necessary set of abilities for community college students to possess in this age of digital distribution. The plethora of information that is generated at an almost instantaneous rate has brought about the need for an information-literate student body with the ability to both decipher and utilize viable and valid information. What do many academic librarians want? Required information literacy classes! When do they want them? Now! This poster will show how a large university developed an on-demand library readiness mini-course online that has recently become a requirement for all undergraduate orientation classes, both in-person and online. Furthermore, the online mini-course has been adopted by numerous faculty in research-based courses across varied subject areas throughout the University. Intensive English Programs (IEP) are organized in a variety of ways as they seek to prepare students for study or work in an English-medium environment. This poster highlights how an IEP that is integrated into a state university can support campus internationalization efforts while preparing non-native English speakers for their future studies and careers.
