The phenomenon of social coping among students with gifts and talents (SWGT) is not well understood. In interviews with elementary-, middle-, and high-school aged SWGT (N = 90; 50% female) from the United States, United Kingdom, South Korea, Ireland, and France, the universality of awareness of visibility of their exceptional abilities, high expectations and pressure to achieve from adults and peers, and peer jealousy and rejection, was confirmed. In all countries, SWGT were concerned about peers’ upward social comparison and the effects of their outperformance on peers’ feelings. SWGT attempted to hide their abilities or conform to peers’ behaviors. Prosocial …

“Designing Conditions For Talented Students To Be Creative, Ethical, And Scientifically Minded”, José M. Torres

Keynotes, Speeches, and Lectures

Abstract

In this keynote speech, I describe three exponential technologies affecting our present and future world and make the case for how these advances in technology require new skills that go beyond content knowledge. Following the description and illustration of exponential technologies, I paint a vivid picture of three former students of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) who can serve as icons for how we can nurture the next generation of creative, ethical, and scientifically minded persons. Through their individual vignettes, I describe how IMSA creates the conditions to nurture the most important skills and predispositions necessary now …

Diversifying The Stem Education To Career Pathway!!!, Adrienne Coleman, Sowmya Anjur

Faculty Publications & Research

Education has always been a privilege. Most of us do not realize this. Opposition to the implementation of diversity and social equity has littered history. Many modern inventions and improvements were conceived under circumstances that included dire poverty and social inequity. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy recognizes and acknowledges the historical underrepresentation and marginalization of culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse groups, both universally, and particularly, in STEM education and professions. Thus, this presentation will focus on the development of a plan for advancing equity in STEM education and representation and creating a diverse, inclusive community of global citizens who …

The Demonstrable Value Of Honors Education: New Research Evidence, Andrew J. Cognard-Black , Editor, Jerry Herron , Editor, Patricia J. Smith , Editor

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs

“We all know—instinctively, experientially—that what we as honors teachers and administrators do for our students adds value to their college education and general college experience. Providing hard, demonstrable evidence for that which we know in our bodies as it were . . . turns out not to be so easy, a fact anyone who has had to make the case for additional, or even simply continued, honors funding to a new dean or college president has likely encountered. The results presented in this volume provide, in a diversity of ways via a diversity of research approaches, the sorts of evidence …
