Absence is a normal part of childhood for kids going to school because sometimes life happens. Kids get sick, have family emergencies, the family might have to move, or lack consistent transportation to get to school. The Early Learning Program (ELP) is a non-profit organization that provides education for preschool aged children and focuses on making preschool easily accessible, primarily for low-income families. Science is often limited or absent in an early education classroom. It is important to give children an outlet to experience science in the classroom or through lesson plans. Having science at an early age can provide children the opportunities to build up their reasoning, to question things about the world, and later in life to feel more confident in other STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities or areas. To address this need, I created a 3-day program for 3 to 5 year-olds at Little Learners of Aptos School in Aptos, California.

In many preschools and early childhood educational settings, mathematical skill-building is lacking in the curriculum. With a lack of math curriculum in a preschool classroom, students may not have foundational mathematical skills, may lack problem-solving skills, and may lack self-confidence in math skills. To help children develop their math skills, I designed a virtual math activity for 3 to 4-year-old preschool children attending Monterey Peninsula College Early Childhood Lab School.

There is little nutritional education in preschools. Children are not being taught about the importance of eating nutritious foods. When children are taught about nutrition, they will create positive eating habits that could make them less susceptible to health complications. The increasing focus on literacy development and kindergarten readiness in preschool has created a lack of science education in early childhood education. In recent research, Head Start found that of the four academic readiness domains for preschoolers (i.e., language, literacy, math, and science), science is the lowest-performing area amongst students in their program (Bustamante, White, & Greenfield, 2018). Modern day technology has seeped into homes at an alarming rate in the past decade. Children now have access to computer programs, applications, social media and educational programs all at their reach. The classroom isn’t immune to this scenario. Collaboration with the Central Coast YMCA and CHISPA Housing, the goal is to help the disadvantaged kids in grades kinder to 6th in an after-school program. The Central Coast YMCA has a mission to strengthen communities through programs that develop youth and support healthy living. CHISPA housing strengthens low-income families, by providing affordable housing. Contributing factors to the low literacy levels in Monterey County are, language barriers within families, lack of parent engagement and poverty. There is a lack of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ+) representation in elementary school curriculum. This deficit leads to a lack of understanding of LGBTQ+ identities, limited gender role diversity, and a predisposition to teasing and anti-gay bullying among children. Therefore, I created a two-day lesson for kindergarteners at Del Rey Woods Elementary in Seaside, California. Participants were evaluated before, during, and after the sessions. Results showed an increase in understanding and acknowledging LGBTQ+ families.
