Quality in early childhood education matters. Scholarly research has demonstrated the critical importance of the first three years of a child’s life. The experiences and interactions children have in these early years significantly affects brain development and helps to establish the foundation for future learning. The topic of this study was to pilot test a Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) in early education programs in Magadan, Russian Federation (RU) and in Mankato, Minnesota, United States of America (USA). The purpose of this study was to understand the use of a specific instrument to provide direction for the improvement of …

Prompt strategies have been used to increase the compliance of preschool-aged children to teacher directives (Radley & Dart, 2015; Wilder & Atwell, 2006; Wolery & Gast, 1984). This paper describes two experiments conducted to determine if classroom teachers could learn to use the LtM prompt hierarchy and if child compliance would increase in response to teacher behavior. This study builds on the current literature base by using prompting, specifically LtM (first described by Horner & Keilitz, 1975), with the additional requirement of teacher-child proximity and teacher- child eye level prior to beginning the prompt sequence, which is consistent with recommended …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of modifications to the environment and a teacher mediated intervention in regard to the early literacy behaviors of preschoolers receiving early childhood special education services. There were three classrooms targeted. Out of the three classrooms, there was a focus on nine children with developmental delay. Step one was to complete a classroom assessment to identify the early literacy supports needed for each classroom. Step two was to collect baseline literacy behaviors during center time, a period when children are allowed to choose their activities. Step 3 was to implement the …

The Global Guidelines for Early Childhood Education and Care in the 21st Century were developed as a collaborative project between the U. S. National Committee of the World Organization for Early Childhood (OMEP) and of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI). The project's intent was to provide guidance concerning the fundamental elements that are necessary to create high quality environments for early care and education. This paper presents the history of the development of a related instrument, called the ACEI Global Guidelines Assessment (GGA). The GGA was developed to help early childhood educators assess and improve program quality, particularly …

Researchers are investigating methods of data collection that do not intrude or invade children's lives in order to understanding their cognitive and social development. This article summarizes results of five studies which used combinations of digital photographs and interviews with children in order to understand various situations in the children's lives. The authors conclude that collecting data with photographs, especially when used by the children themselves, results in a rich body of data and information.

During the past SO years, law-makers and researchers in the United States have sought legal and procedural methods to reduce risks and harms to research subjects. An important process has been the creation of IRBs at institutions of higher education. The purpose of laws and rules about research review are to:
- Safeguard the rights and welfare of human subjects in research and related activities.
- Assist faculty to avoid the possibility of unknowingly committing unethical acts.
This article describes three principles of conducting research with human subjects, steps in applying for IRB approval, three levels of research that require !RB review, …

THE FIVE SENSES is one resource unit. It is hoped to serve as a resource to others as they guide the learning of young children. It is not a cut-and-dried,how-to-do-it book. But it is a collection of numerous learning experiences within the context of a unit setting. The various disciplines are not, and cannot, be separated; learning overlaps. With a central theme, young children will have many opportunities to examine, investigate, explore, experience and discover concepts of meaning. As the children approach the same concept from a number of experiences, they will have opportunities to formulate ideas, to test these …
