How Mental Health, Sojourner Adjustment, And Drinking Motives Impact Alcohol-Related Consequences For College Students Studying Abroad, Laura Kay Thompson Dec 2015

How Mental Health, Sojourner Adjustment, And Drinking Motives Impact Alcohol-Related Consequences For College Students Studying Abroad, Laura Kay Thompson

Dissertations - ALL

The topic of college student drinking has been widely addressed in the literature. Traditional-aged college students are considered to be an at-risk population in terms of the problematic use of alcohol, putting them at risk for a wide range of negative consequences. College students who study abroad are a sub-group of students who may be vulnerable to increased alcohol-related consequences due to variables associated with being in an unfamiliar environment where alcohol is often more accessible. While previous studies have explored the impact that a range of factors has on alcohol-related consequences for students abroad, none has examined the impact …

Openness To The "Other" During A Summer Language Study Abroad In Madrid, Spain: Six Case Studies, Samuel Cox Jul 2015

Openness To The "Other" During A Summer Language Study Abroad In Madrid, Spain: Six Case Studies, Samuel Cox

Dissertations (1934 -)

The purpose of this study was to explore the interaction of summer language study abroad students in Madrid, Spain, with a cultural and linguistic "Other," and to examine the resulting evolution in those participants' openness to that Other. Gordon Allport's four optimal conditions for prejudice reduction in intergroup contact theory provided the framework for this analysis. The student in a language study abroad context is both a linguistic and cultural minority, an experience manifested in multiple daily interactions that potentially affect openness to the linguistic and cultural Other. As such, qualitative data were drawn from six participants via interviews during …

California Student Counselors Reflect On A Study Abroad Experience In New Zealand, John M. Winslade, Lorraine Hedtke, Amy Douglass, Korina Echeverria, Dorry Lillard, Joanna Garcia, Stefany Zacarias, Samantha Stephens, Krystal Howard

Special Education, Rehabilitation & Counseling Faculty Publications

Seven counseling and guidance students from California participated in a study abroad program in which they were placed in a high school in Auckland, New Zealand, for one month. Their comments on the experience in response to researchers’ questions form the basis of this paper. They suggest that the participants benefited from being immersed in a culturally different context where they had to consider differences in school organization, counseling priorities, and students’ cultural mores. This immersion required them to think about their own professional values and to engage in high level learning, appropriate to masters level field experience work. They …

The Impact Of Study Abroad On Multicultural Competency Among Student Affairs Graduate Students, Matthew N. Musser Apr 2015

The Impact Of Study Abroad On Multicultural Competency Among Student Affairs Graduate Students, Matthew N. Musser

Masters Theses

Research has demonstrated the importance of multicultural competency for student affairs practitioners and their ability to effectively serve students (Pope, Reynolds, & Mueller, 2004). However, there has been little research into the various programs, especially study abroad, designed to impact multicultural competency among student affairs practitioners. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact that a short-term study abroad experience had on student affairs graduate students‟ multicultural competency. The study involved quantitative survey research methods involving 90 former graduate students who participated in the experience between the years 1999-2010 and who were still active in the profession. Participants …

Promoting Critical Thinking Through An Interdisciplinary Study Abroad Program, Wei Wei Cai, Gopal Sankaran Apr 2015

Promoting Critical Thinking Through An Interdisciplinary Study Abroad Program, Wei Wei Cai, Gopal Sankaran

Early & Middle Grades Education Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the promotion of critical thinking through an interdisciplinary curriculum design using multidisciplinary faculty as well as details the implementation of an experiential short-term study abroad program in China. To achieve this educational goal of critical thinking, along with meeting the requirements specific to each course, the program was built on a framework using two interrelated approaches – theme-based interdisciplinary curriculum and cultural immersion. The theme-based interdisciplinary curriculum was constructed on three principles (the ability to pose great questions that encompassed drawing knowledge and skills from each discipline, acquiring global awareness, and developing glocal awareness). Cultural immersion was …

Undergraduate Students’ Perceptions Of Study Abroad And Their Level Of Achievement Of Global Learning Outcomes, Claudia Grigorescu Mar 2015

Undergraduate Students’ Perceptions Of Study Abroad And Their Level Of Achievement Of Global Learning Outcomes, Claudia Grigorescu

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study expanded on current research on study abroad and global learning, using the Global Perspective Inventory (GPI), and conducted at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, FL. The GPI assesses the holistic development of a global perspective in higher education within three domains and their respective FIU-determined equivalents: cognitive (global awareness), intrapersonal (global perspective), and interpersonal (global engagement). The main purpose of this study was to assess FIU’s undergraduate students’ perceptions of study abroad on their level of achievement of global awareness, global perspective, and global engagement. The secondary purpose was to determine how the students described their study …

Teaching Abroad: Ensuring A Good Opportunity Is Really Great, Garry Mcdaniel Mar 2015

Teaching Abroad: Ensuring A Good Opportunity Is Really Great, Garry Mcdaniel

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

With increased globalization, more colleges and universities are establishing faculty exchanges, study abroad programs, collaborative research efforts, and technical assistance programs with counterparts overseas resulting in enhanced faculty development, increased learning for students, revenue generation and prestige for the partnering institutions. For faculty, the opportunity to teach abroad can be a fulfilling and career enhancing experience. However, if faculty are inadequately prepared and supported, valuable time and resources are wasted, student learning is impacted, and the image of the institution and faculty member may suffer. The purpose of this research was to determine how faculty and their home institutions can …

The American Student Abroad And The Perceived Impact In The Local Community, Emily Gaul Jan 2015

The American Student Abroad And The Perceived Impact In The Local Community, Emily Gaul

Master's Theses

The internationalization of higher education has contributed to the increase of American students studying abroad. Students studying abroad do have an impact the local host communities’ social, economic and cultural traditions. Although, students may or may not be aware of the consequences, both negative and positive, of their impact. This research sought to examine the perceived impact by both alumni and local faculty of a small program in Tanzania. Alumni were reflective on their experience in regards to how they wavered between feeling like a tourist and feeling more connected to the community. Alumni and local faculty both felt that …

Study Abroad, Global Knowledge And The Epistemic Communities Of Higher Education, Rebecca Hovey Jan 2015

Study Abroad, Global Knowledge And The Epistemic Communities Of Higher Education, Rebecca Hovey

Lewis Global Studies Center Staff Publications

International education and study abroad change the boundaries of who is included in the community of US higher education as more and more colleges and universities incorporate mission statements with aspirations of global citizenship. I argue that this changing frame of the community, moral purpose and appreciation of different worldviews has profound and significant implications for the academic and professional disciplines that constitute the academy. The impact of study abroad can be – and perhaps with a new generation of scholars will be – an epistemological shift within the disciplines to include both new modes of knowledge acquisition as well …

The Self-Perceived Impact Of An International Immersion Experience On The Cultural Competency And Professional Practice Of Recently Graduated Registered Nurses, Christopher Vaughn Jan 2015

The Self-Perceived Impact Of An International Immersion Experience On The Cultural Competency And Professional Practice Of Recently Graduated Registered Nurses, Christopher Vaughn

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Significant health care disparities exist in the United States. Nurses can play an important role eliminating these disparities. International immersion experiences for undergraduate nursing students may provide long-lasting enhancements in cultural competency and improvements in professional practice. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study is to explore how a faculty-led international immersion experience for undergraduate nursing students in public health nursing has influenced cultural competency and how this is perceived to have impacted the individuals' current professional practice. Campinha-Bacote's (2002) Process of Cultural Competence in the Delivery of Health Care Services served as a theoretical framework for the study. Participants …

Nursing Student Adaptation During A Semester Abroad, Karen R. Breitkreuz Dec 2014

Nursing Student Adaptation During A Semester Abroad, Karen R. Breitkreuz

Karen R. Breitkreuz

This study was completed to understand correlations between undergraduate nursing students’ initial readiness for cross-cultural experience in study abroad and final levels of socio-cultural adaptation. Deardorff (2006) suggests that attitudes, values, knowledge, and skills are essential factors leading to effective function in a new culture. Her Developmental Model of Intercultural Competence was the guiding framework for this research study. Two groups of American nursing students traveling to South Africa and Puerto Rico for a semester were invited to participate. Students completed the Global Competence Aptitude Assessment prior to departure and the Socio-cultural Adaptation Scale at week four and upon return …
