Unalienated Recognition At The Core Of Meaningful Exchange Between School And Community. A Response To "Unalienated Recognition As A Feature Of Democratic Schooling", Robin R. Sears
Democracy and Education
I apply the concept of unalienated recognition as a form of democratic exchange, introduced by Rheingold (2012), to a different educational setting. Through a case study of the School for Field Studies international environmental programs, that are, like Rheingold’s study school, field based and community centered, I explore the hypothesis that today’s undergraduate students’ desire to serve and to solve can be usefully harnessed in formal coursework and research to address real problems at their foundation. I link the cases by building on Rheingold’s use of the concept of boundary objects as an organizing principle behind the success in motivating …

We report the results of a qualitative research study from in-depth interviews with 23 American students’ responses to a study abroad experience at New College, Oxford University (U.K.). Two primary themes are reported here from the analysis of students’ transcripts: maturity development and personal development. Maturity development said to have been stretched through new experiences and increased independence. Personal development was enhanced via expanded horizons and the indelible impression that was left with students following the SA experience.

Students' Immersion Experiences In Study Abroad, Federica Goldoni
Publications and Research
Data show that a larger number of students than ever are participating in learning experiences abroad. However, such programs are not always as immersive and intensive as participants, faculty, program directors, and administrators would wish. This study examines the ways in which students created sustained opportunities to interact with members of the host community as well as episodes of cultural clash, miscommunication, and misunderstanding experienced at the intersection of two cultures that led to diminishing willingness to interact with members of the host community. The article concludes with recommendations for pre-departure experiences that are designed to help students become more …

The Challenges Of Faculty-Led Study Abroad In Cuba, Amy S. Orf
Faculty Works
Recent changes in U.S. travel regulations now allow for short-term study abroad in Cuba. However, planning and leading Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs in Cuba present certain challenges not encountered in other programs. In this presentation I discuss current U.S. regulations regarding educational travel to Cuba, as well as the particular challenges that I faced in leading two successful Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs in Cuba, including recruiting, budget and finances, travel arrangements, on-site logistics, and safety.

Challenging Problematic Dichotomies: Bridging The Gap Between Critical Pedagogy And Liberal Academic Approaches To Global Education, Michael W. O'Sullivan Dr., Harry Smaller
Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale
This empirical exploration examines two case studies involving secondary school students’ involvement in global education. The paper begins with brief discussions of three related concepts (global citizenship education, study abroad, and international service learning), followed by a description of the case studies and an analysis of our empirical findings. We conclude with some comment on the possible connections between our findings and the ongoing tensions between advocates of explicitly critical/transformative pedagogy, as compared to those favouring a liberal academic perspective – suggesting that, in some circumstances at least, there may be more similarities than differences in outcomes for individual students …

Academic Programs' Perspectives On Study Abroad Opportunities Within Curricula, Camille A. Balasek
Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration
Many students choose to engage in international study abroad opportunities during their time in college. Research on study abroad motivations and benefits and integrated curricula was reviewed for this study. The purpose of this study was to examine Cal Poly Departments that have integrated or incorporated study abroad programs into their curricula. Eight face-to-interviews were conducted from April to May of 2013 regarding Cal Poly Departments’ international program structure and logistics. Results indicated that exposure, understanding of the international and global world, understanding cultural diversity, new perspectives, and personal awareness were benefits of students’ international experience. The findings show that …
What The Unglamorous Side Of Study Abroad Taught Me, Kathryn E. Bucolo
What The Unglamorous Side Of Study Abroad Taught Me, Kathryn E. Bucolo
SURGE
I’ve been gallivanting around this beautiful planet posing as a study abroad student taking classes and writing papers for the past academic year, one semester in England and one in Argentina (where I still am) and, just like all the brochures, promotions, and panels of study abroad survivors say, it has been absolutely chock-full of amazing experiences, people, places, foods—I think “transformative” is the proper term.
But transformative can mean many things. It doesn’t just mean that you “find yourself” or “change your life”—it means you see the less glamorous stuff about yourself, too. [excerpt]

A Research Proposal: The Level Of Economic Return Of Study Abroad Impact On Career Development, Xiaoyun Xu
MBA Student Scholarship
Study abroad is one of the most exciting and challenging experiences someone could engage in their higher education. Some of the benefits of study abroad include the potential of learning a foreign language, increasing knowledge of different cultures, developing communication skills, all of which could help students widen their career paths. Especially as today’s 21st Century, global economics is interdependent with business, finance and trade. Therefore, it is more and more urgent for a university education to include more opportunities for students to gain their knowledge of global interdependencies and develop their cross-cultural competency, which eventually helps to explore …

Honors Program Projects
The purpose of the Predeparture and Reentry Needs project was to examine the reentry adjustment of Olivet Nazarene University (ONU) Spanish students who had already returned home from required study abroad experiences in order to craft predeparture and reentry programs based on findings. In Phase 1, the researcher recorded qualitative interviews in March and April of 2012 with 22 ONU undergraduate students who studied abroad in Spanish-speaking countries before the spring 2012 semester. Then the researcher listened to each interview again, taking notes on each and transcribing quotes. The researcher found that all students experienced some level and kind of …

International Education Exposure In Secondary Schooling: Impacting Academic Outcomes Among Urban Girls Of Color, Tiffini L. Andorful
International Education Exposure In Secondary Schooling: Impacting Academic Outcomes Among Urban Girls Of Color, Tiffini L. Andorful
Dissertations
Existing literature reveals a gap in research on high school students of color studying abroad. Therefore, this study seeks to provide an understanding and explanation of how international educational travel experiences and global education impact the educational outlook of urban high school girls of color. This study proposes that a positive educational outlook including a student's academic engagement, educational aspirations, motivation, perception of the world, and self-efficacy can later generate school persistence and predict high school completion despite the increasing rates of minority female dropouts and the potential effects of race, class, and gender.
Through a qualitative case study and …

This study examines the disequilibrium raised by a cultural immersion experience, using the structure of White racial identity development, in an effort to better scaffold the immersion experience in the future. Thirty-two students participated in an immersion experience in Quito, Ecuador. The study follows their experience as they strive to make sense of their experience and begin to understand and unpack their own sense of privilege. The six stages of racial identity development are used as a grid through which to view and consider the experiences of teacher candidates in a cultural immersion experience. Two predominant themes included schools/classroom management, …

This multi-institutional study attempts to discover whether different international activities in which students participate yield different outcomes for the development of students’ global and intercultural competencies. The five international travel and study abroad measures analyzed include students’ participation in a university study abroad program; study abroad program affiliated with another college or university; travel abroad for cross-cultural experiences or informal education; travel abroad for a service learning, volunteer, or work experience; and travel abroad for recreation. The research question that guides this inquiry is as follows: controlling for other factors, is participation in these five types of international travel activities …

Use Of Subordination In English Second Language Texts, Susan L. Nesbitt Perez
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This study investigates features of high-level academic writing in English with the aim of understanding the development of L2 English learners' academic writing skills as they follow a course of study in an English-speaking country. The study focuses on L2 writers' text quality and use of clause subordinators as a measure of writing complexity. The typology of the writers' L1s provides the organizational framework for the study, with three language typology groupings determined by a writer's L1 word order tendency: (1) configurational languages, (2) nonconfigurational languages, and (3) Asian languages.

"The Constellations Were In A Different Place": Using Blogs To Understand Student Learning During Study Abroad, Leslie Pitman
Theses and Dissertations
While a great deal of research has been done on the pedagogical implications and uses of blogging, and even more research has been done on the effects of study abroad, few studies has investigated the use of blogging as a way that learning is processed during study abroad. This study sought to understand how students use blogs during a study abroad semester and the ways in which the blogs reveal evidence of learning. Eleven blogs, written by students at the University of South Carolina (USC) during their respective semesters abroad, were read, coded, and analyzed in order to answer the …
