Activities, Advantages, And Inequalities: The Theory And Practice Of Sports, Arts, And Service In Catholic High Schools, Andrew M. Guest
Journal of Catholic Education
Catholic schools have a particular tradition of excellence in the types of sports, arts, and service activities that have a prominent role in contemporary American education and youth culture. When Sports Illustrated magazine, for example, rated the top High School athletic programs in the United States over half (13 of the 25) were Catholic schools, despite the fact that only about three percent of American secondary schools are Catholic. Likewise, though other types of activity programs are harder to quantify, many Catholic schools have extensive and high quality offerings in music, drama, community service, and other domains that serve to …

Increasing Awareness Amongst Injured Student-Athletes, Daniel Lomeli
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The NCAA states that there are around half a million college student athletes in America, and according to the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (2020) ninety percent of them will have a sports related injury some time in their career. Student-athletes compared to non-athletes are less likely to utilize resources and professional assistance (Moulton, Molstad, & Turner 1997). Due to fear of seeming weak, losing training time, judgement from peers or coaches and the appearance of needing any psychological assistance, many athletes are less likely to seek help (Brooks & Bull, 1999). Using Sports To Develop Community In The Mathematics Classroom, Benjamin Lawson
Using Sports To Develop Community In The Mathematics Classroom, Benjamin Lawson
Honors Projects
A positive classroom climate and community should be achieved in every classroom (Frisby, 2020, pgs. 199-200). This sense of community is especially sparse in the field of mathematics education. According to the High School Athletics Participation Survey (2019) the number of high schoolers participating in sports continues to rise. Sport ideologies could offer a bridge to connect mathematics classrooms and establish community in ways a pure educational perspective has not been able to. The purpose of this analysis is to shed light on an alternate perspective of mathematics education and incorporate sport philosophies to foster community building by establishing rapport, …

However, researchers have made recommendations to investigate components of sportsmanship with the intent to align better with the goals of other development programs that seek to promote character. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational design study was to use a multiple linear regression on an archival data set of Character in Sport Index scores to determine if the linear combination of the variables class, age, type of sport, and gender have predictive significance for Character in Sport Index scores. Subjects included 8,701 cadets between the ages …

Relationship Of General Athletic Performance Markers To Intra-Team Ranking Of Sport Performance, Steven Keith Scruggs Ii
Theses and Dissertations
A foundational principle in sport science involves applying an evidence-based approach to training and development of athletes. The primary objective is to provide an effective training program, while monitoring general athletic performance (GAP) development (i.e., athlete-monitoring), ensuring intended adaptations are occurring. Much of the literature has focused on GAP markers (e.g., physical qualities related to strength, speed, power, agility, and endurance) which are only suggested to influence competitive sport performance (SP) outcomes (e.g., yards per carry, batting average, hitting percentage, rank or placement, etc.; B. Alejo, personal communication, July 13, 2019). This gap in the literature should be filled via …
