Benefits Of Animal Assisted Therapy With Children In Special Education, Erica Ann Dolesy Bugenhagen

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is used to improve the overall mental, physical, emotional, and social functioning of a patient. The use of animals in therapy practice is becoming more common, yet it is still not entirely integrated in to the educational setting. The research regarding the effectiveness of this type of therapy is limited, but there are a number of therapists and patients who can attest to its benefits. Animal assisted therapy has been shown to have profound effectiveness with specific populations of students who receive special education services. In recent years, policy concerns have regarded over-representation of minority students in special education as a problem in schools across the United States. While over-representation may be an issue for some racial groups, there is a lurking problem of inequality in the accessibility of education for certain students. Factors Contributing To School Placement For Students With Emotional Behavioral Disorders, Colleen F. Weis

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Students with Emotional Behavioral Disorders, in combination with significant and chronic behaviors, are often placed in alternative educational settings. It also studied the narratives supporting students’ return to a less restrictive educational placement. Participants were school district representatives in one Minnesota county who served on …

Increasing Self Regulation Skills In Students With Emotional/Behavioral Disorder, Jessica L. Ronkainen

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Students who qualify under Emotional/Behavioral Disorder (EBD) for special education services can exhibit significant external behaviors that significantly interfere with their educational progress. EBD students who exhibit these significant behaviors often also exhibit significant difficulties with self-regulation. Difficulty with self-regulation can be due to biological factors or environmental factors. EBD students need research based, intensive interventions to increase their self-regulation skills, which will therefore reduce externalizing behaviors. Interventions need to be implemented across the student’s entire day including interventions with parent interactions, school-wide interventions, interventions in the general education environment and interventions in the special education environment. Interventions in the …
