The benefits of family involvement in students’ education range from academic and behavioral growth to better attendance and social skills. Parent involvement in the educational process for students with disabilities is a legal right, yet barriers to involvement result in what researchers call an untapped capacity for joint collaboration between parents and educators. This literature review sought to determine how parent involvement is defined and then identify barriers to involvement. Those barriers are addressed with research summaries of how to empower teachers to support family involvement and how to empower parents to be involved in the special education process. One …

The purpose of this action research project was to determine how educators can promote self-management skills among students with disabilities in the general education classroom. Previous studies were used to summarize the current state of social-emotional learning in the American public-school system and to identify strategies that promote self-management skills in special education classrooms. The Delphi method was used to distinguish which of these strategies would promote self-management skills for students with disabilities in the general education classroom. Panelists (N = 18) generated and ranked strategies in three questionnaires, and they created consensus on the top 10 strategies with the …

The majority of students with special education needs spend of 80% their time in general education classrooms (National Center for Education Statistics, 2019c). While participation in general education classes is linked to positive outcomes for students with special education needs, little has been researched regarding actual practices occurring in inclusive classrooms and the impact of such practices. Twice exceptional learners are a growing percentage of the population in the academic community, and yet educators are greatly unprepared to work with these students. This thesis explores a difficult subject for both parents and special educators: the use of restraint and seclusion in the classroom. While no teacher wants to go hands-on with a student, crisis situations can arise in which a student becomes a threat to themselves or others. In these moments restrictive procedures are employed to maintain safety, but this does not address the underlying issues that caused the unsafe behavior in the first place, or prevent the behavior from occurring again. Minnesota Rule 8719.5000 requires that special education teachers assess how environmental factors impact students during the evaluation process. Despite evidence explaining how environmental factors impact student achievement and behaviors, there is not a formal tool available to special education teachers that allows them to assess how classroom environment might influence a student. This project provides an extensive literature review examining how classroom ecology (the combined elements of the physical environment and social environment) impact student achievement. Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is used to improve the overall mental, physical, emotional, and social functioning of a patient. The use of animals in therapy practice is becoming more common, yet it is still not entirely integrated in to the educational setting. The research regarding the effectiveness of this type of therapy is limited, but there are a number of therapists and patients who can attest to its benefits. Students with Emotional Behavioral Disorders, in combination with significant and chronic behaviors, are often placed in alternative educational settings. No clear rationale is used by school districts to determine educational placement, and schools rely on a variety of settings to provide instruction and services to students with disabilities. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the narrative regarding student placement in restrictive settings and the individual and institutional rationales for student transitions. Students who qualify under Emotional/Behavioral Disorder (EBD) for special education services can exhibit significant external behaviors that significantly interfere with their educational progress. EBD students who exhibit these significant behaviors often also exhibit significant difficulties with self-regulation. Difficulty with self-regulation can be due to biological factors or environmental factors. EBD students need research based, intensive interventions to increase their self-regulation skills, which will therefore reduce externalizing behaviors. Interventions need to be implemented across the student’s entire day including interventions with parent interactions, school-wide interventions, interventions in the general education environment and interventions in the special education environment.
