Every Student Can Be An Einstein: Addressing Math Anxiety In Today’S Classrooms, Joseph M. Furner
Transformations
This article is geared toward mathematics educators in hopes that they can ultimately excite young people about mathematics, encourage students to be confident in their ability to solve problems, understand mathematical concepts, and see math as a human endeavor. The author believes that as students feel less anxious about and more confident in their abilities to do math that their performance will improve. As math test scores are often a concern for principals, teachers, and society at large, success and confidence with mathematics is critical in our high-tech globally competitive world. Math anxiety has become a growing concern in the …
Gender Bias In It Hiring Practices: An Ethical Analysis, Harmony L. Alford
Gender Bias In It Hiring Practices: An Ethical Analysis, Harmony L. Alford
Student Scholarship – Computer Science
With the current movement to increase the number of women in STEM-related careers, modified IT hiring practices may be considered debatably unethical. Studies cited in this work have asserted that female representation in STEM fields is integral not only to encouraging continued progression toward gender equality in the workplace but also to creating more inclusive products. In turn, some argue that when faced with reasonably comparable female and male candidates, a hiring manager should select the female candidate in order to increase the female representation in the company and provide a female perspective. However, it is simultaneously debatably unethical and …
Black Minds Matter: The Academic Identity Of First Year African American Stem Students, Christa Dawn Platt
Black Minds Matter: The Academic Identity Of First Year African American Stem Students, Christa Dawn Platt
Theses and Dissertations
A national push exists to increase the number of African American students who pursue STEM majors (Baber, 2014). While African American students have high aspirations to pursue STEM disciplines, an incongruence remains between their aspirations and their attainment of STEM degrees (Archer, Dewitt, Osbourne, 2015). This work seeks to critically underscore the structural issues that impede African American students in their journey as STEM majors. These impediments have been explored as factors that influence the identity of African American students. In the spirit of Critical Race Theory, the goal of this study is to give voice to first year African …

This study examined the potential relationship of accessible hands-on science learning experiences to the development of positive beliefs concerning one’s capacity to function in the sciences and motivation to consider science as a college major and career. Findings from Likert survey items given before and after engaging in accessible hands-on science laboratories show that students who were blind or had low vision (BLV) were more likely to agree with the following items after engaging in accessible science experiences: 1) I plan on enrolling as a science major in college; 2) My educational experiences, so far, have given me the …
Understanding Stem Learning Outcomes Using A Phenomenographic Approach, Cheryl L. Brooks
Understanding Stem Learning Outcomes Using A Phenomenographic Approach, Cheryl L. Brooks
Doctoral Dissertations
Today’s STEM professionals are called upon to meet the nation’s technical challenges with innovative technologies that push the boundaries of our current understanding and practices. While the total number of STEM graduates may be sufficient for the number of STEM jobs, many lack the specific competencies needed for practice, suggesting that science and engineering graduates may not be adequately prepared for careers in the STEM fields (U.S. Joint Economic Committee, 2012). Using a phenomenographical approach, the researcher interviewed 18 STEM professionals to understand the qualitatively different ways in which they gained the technical and professional competencies needed to be successful …

Patent Law, Copyright Law, And The Girl Germs Effect, Ann Bartow
Law Faculty Scholarship
[Excerpt] "Inventors pursue patents and authors receive copyrights.
No special education is required for either endeavor, and nothing
precludes a person from being both an author and an inventor.
Inventors working on patentable industrial projects geared
toward commercial exploitation tend to be scientists or engineers.
Authors, with the exception of those writing computer code, tend
to be educated or trained in the creative arts, such as visual art,
performance art, music, dance, acting, creative writing, film
making, and architectural drawing. There is a well-warranted
societal supposition that most of the inventors of patentable
inventions are male. Assumptions about the genders …

Building A Pathway To Engineering For Our Daughters – Brick By Brick, Ali P. Gordon
UCF Forum
As a father of young elementary and middle school-aged kids, I’m also curious to know exactly how my undergrad students came to be interested in mechanical engineering. An exchange with a UCF student might go like this: “You did a great job on the exam. Congrats! By the way, how did you get interested in mechanical engineering, anyway?” I mentally log the answers for my kids’ future benefit.

Promoting Girls’ And Boys’ Engagement And Participation In Senior Secondary Stem Fields And Occupational Aspirations, Helen Watt
2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences
Sufficient numbers of people with science and mathematics qualifications are needed for continuing growth in productivity and industry innovation. The Australian Industry Group (2015, p. 5) cautioned, ‘the pipeline of STEM skills to the workforce remains perilous’ because participation in sciences and advanced mathematics at school and university is in decline, participation is not comparable with other nations, and our students underperform in major international studies. Gender differences in enrolments and career plans continue to fuel the concern of researchers with interest in gender equity. Many have argued girls prematurely restrict their options by discontinuing particular STEM subjects in adolescence, …

John Rawls (b. 1921, d. 2002) was an American political philosopher in the liberal tradition. His theory of justice as fairness envisions a society of free citizens holding equal basic rights cooperating within an egalitarian economic system. His account of political liberalism addresses the legitimate use of political power in a democracy, aiming to show how enduring unity may be achieved despite the diversity of worldviews that free institutions allow. His writings on the law of peoples extend these theories to liberal foreign policy, with the goal of imagining how a peaceful and tolerant international order might be possible.
