In collaboration with the Tax Academy of Singapore, and with the support of the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore, the Singapore Management University has launched the SMU-TA Centre for Excellence in Taxation (SMU-TA CET) today. The SMU-TA CET represents a major new initiative in research addressing international and regional tax issues and taxation policies. It is the first research centre of its kind in Singapore. The aim of the Centre is to produce highly robust research in international and regional tax issues for policy-development and engagement of the international tax community.

Hernandez, an Honors student, is the first Dominican undergraduate to receive this fellowship and one of only a few non-UC Berkeley students to be accepted into the program. The award, she said, will help her decide whether she will pursue a research-based career or medical-based career in the future. The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Singapore Management University (SMU) will establish a Centre for Technology and Social-Behavioural Insights (CTSBI) to tap on high performance computing technology, big data analytics and behavioural sciences to study people-centric issues and human behaviour including how people think, feel and act in different settings. For the past 18 months, Anita Hin, Monica Fernandez and Chelsea Prado met with first responders and focus groups and coded and analyzed data from fall incident reports. They also worked with an evaluation consultant who was hired by the Novato Fire Department supported by a grant through the County of Marin Mental Health Services Act to look at the link between depression and falls. Falls are the number one call that firefighters respond to, and the numbers are expected to rise with an increase in the elderly population.

Collective Begging At Its Best: Labor-Management Relations In South Dakota, Gary Aguiar

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Public employee labor unions in South Dakota possess a feeble set of bargaining rights, so weak it should be considered “collective begging.” However, our recent contract contains significant victories despite decades of playing defense. What lessons can be learned from this experience that might help other similarly situated faculty unions? What does this case study teach us about the disparity of power, especially where labor has fewer legal and political tools than management? I apply DiGiovanni’s (2011) typology of “intangible influences” on collective bargaining to explain our success. As DiGiovanni predicts, history and timing played a large role in influencing …
