Ouachita Students’ Research Recognized At Arkansas Inbre Conference, Sarah Davis, Ouachita News Bureau

Students of Ouachita Baptist University’s Patterson School of Natural Sciences presented and were recognized at the recent Arkansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) conference in Fayetteville, Ark. Out of the 191 registered student presenters, 26 students were from OBU and three Ouachita students received honorable mentions for their work.

This is a video recording of a panel session hosted by Bond University Library during Bond Research Week 2013 on the topic of using new media (social media) for raising research profiles. The panel session was organised by Peta Hopkins and Wendy Abbott of Bond University Library. The importance of critical thinking is generally recognized by educators and during the past 20 years numerous initiatives have been taken to improve critical thinking. Although research demonstrates courses in communication study can have a positive impact on critical thinking skills, we argue that instruction in critical thinking can be more explicitly covered in basic communication courses. This article details our efforts to infuse critical thinking into an entrylevel communication course and outlines a guide to help communication teachers integrate critical thinking into their courses.

This autoethnographic account chronicles my academic and religious/spiritual path to becoming a professor of Communication. Spiritual influences and significant life events related to prayer, education, teaching, and research serve as sign posts marking the way. The journey begins with a child scientist experimenting with life—and an adolescent discovering the joy of reading through an illness. The journey continues with a crisis in undergraduate years followed by indoctrination stories of graduate school. Securing and retaining an academic position in Communication reveals the complexities of negotiating research and teaching in higher education.
