Technological Ubiquity: Educating Educators For The Dynamic Digital Landscape, Carol Sternberger Jul 2014

Technological Ubiquity: Educating Educators For The Dynamic Digital Landscape, Carol Sternberger

Carol S Sternberger

Educators must be responsive to the dynamic, technology rich healthcare environment. It is important for universities to move beyond expecting graduates to have isolated technology skills. Designing curricula that will produce graduates who are comfortable using technology and possess the ability to interpret, analyze and synthesize data requires a different approach to education. The paper focuses on the various technologies integrated in a graduate course designed to prepare nurse educators to work in both academic and clinical environments. Best practices, evidence-based methods and integrated concepts from a requisite informatics course were foundational in the course assignments that focused on the …

Invited Panel Presentation On Theoretical Perspectives On Research In Higher And Professional Education: Making Sense Of Academic Language And Learning (All), Alisa Percy

Alisa Percy, PhD

Theoretical perspectives on research in higher and professional education
Invited Panel for Higher & Professional Education SIG, 2013 AARE Conference, Adelaide
Alisa Percy (University of Wollongong); Steven Hodge (Deakin University) and Jessica Gerrard (The University of Melbourne)
Much of the literature in higher and professional education remains under-theorised. The AARE Higher and Professional Education SIG is committed to enhancing the theoretical profile of research in the post-compulsory education sector and in AARE generally. In addition, a number of key educational theorists in the AARE community will soon be retiring and it is vital to create spaces for early career researchers …

Do The Guiding Principles Help Or Hinder Our Assessment & Development Of Students’ Understanding & Use Of English?, Emily Purser, Alisa Percy Jun 2013

Do The Guiding Principles Help Or Hinder Our Assessment & Development Of Students’ Understanding & Use Of English?, Emily Purser, Alisa Percy

Alisa Percy, PhD

As universities articulate their strategy for improving students’ English language ‘proficiency’, the need for principled guidelines to direct English language education programming is high. Institutions, and ALL educators, have to comply with various educational policies which make reference to constructs such as ELP, ‘communication skills’ and academic ‘literacies’. The interpretation and implementation of these in relation to ALL teaching and disciplinary curriculum development seem largely to be occurring in separate spaces, as though the problems are self-evidently separate, and bounded by different concerns and practices. Do these principles assist in developing a coherent and effective approach to English language education …

Learning Content / Teaching Language, Emily Purser, Alisa Percy

Alisa Percy, PhD

English language teaching in universities is shaped in complex ways by the internationalization of higher education, student mobility and technological development. Within and around English medium universities, educational programs have to respond to changing national, institutional and departmental level understandings of students’ learning needs. In Australia, lecturers across the academic disciplines face, in classrooms and online, a high proportion of students who enter into disciplinary studies before they are quite proficient in the language of instruction – and institutions are required to demonstrate to the national education quality and standards agency (TEQSA) that they are helping international students to develop …

Reconnecting Language And Learning: Re-Integrating Academic And Language/Learning Development, Alisa Percy Jul 2012

Reconnecting Language And Learning: Re-Integrating Academic And Language/Learning Development, Alisa Percy

Alisa Percy, PhD

This presentation is concerned with the connection between academic development and language and learning development practitioners in Australian higher education. In 2002, Rowland argued that academic development could work as a ‘re-integrating force’ (p54) to bring a sense of coherence to professional life in the academy that had become fragmented across five fault-lines: the purpose of higher education, the relationship between students and teachers, the relationship between teachers and managers, the tension between teaching and research, and the fragmentation of knowledge. In this presentation, I propose a sixth fault line; that is, the pedagogical fracture between language and learning, which …

Google Tools: Creative Options For Faculty And Students, Sandie Waters, Suzy Cox

Sandie H Waters

We begin our presentation with an overview of Google Tools and the benefits of using them in your classroom. We will discuss methods to increase student access to information, decrease workloads, and create collaborative opportunities. With the current economic times, budgets are feeling the strain, as are teachers and faculty in Higher Education settings. With web 2.0 tools, specifically Google Tools, we are empowered to use the technology to decrease our budgets, create a paperless environment, and introduce collaborative learning environments into our curriculum.

Our research serves to legitimize teachers in order to empower them to encourage our digital natives …
