This article describes a family literacy project developed and funded by a state university, the state office of education, and a large, urban school district. One in every four people living on our planet goes to bed hungry each day, and many more survive on inadequate diets only to die prematurely. At the same time, many of the world's natural resources are producing food far below their potential. Almost 25 percent of the Earth's adult population are illiterate, and many more are severely deficient in basic educational skills.
