Book Ends is a site-based University reading clinic that provides a nurturing and interactive environment that empowers children to increase their reading achievement through multimodal and research-based practices in literacy. Trained to administer multiple assessments, certified teachers pursuing advanced literacy CT State Certification provide one-on-one instruction that considers students’ interests and strengths while targeting the foundational skills of the common core state standards and the comprehension anchor standards. Each child is partnered with a certified teacher who shares the philosophy that children learn to read by reading and that success comes from many opportunities to practice. Getting Boys To Read: A Look At The Research And The Books They Love, Carrie Lynn Cooper Dean Of Libraries, Kathy Cox Watson

This session focuses on what the research says about males as readers and introduces the audience to great boy books and other types of text that appeals to male readers. The presenters have chosen titles from the Kentucky Bluegrass Awards program that are of interest to young male readers. Presenters also introduce and promote Kentucky’s children’s choice reading program, the Kentucky Bluegrass Awards. To misquote George Ella Lyon, the presenters woudl like to get boys to "shake hands with a book."

In 2007 the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) was commissioned to supply advice to the NSW Department of Education and Training on literacy assessment instruments suitable for students at the commencement of Year K, for use in the Best start initiative. This report outlines: the modifications made to the literacy assessments developed for the ACER Longitudinal Literacy and Numeracy Study (LLANS) to make it suitable; the testing of the literacy assessment in a sample of kindergartens in New South Wales; analysis of student results; and recommendations.
