This study examined the literacy events and practices of Hmong women achieving academic success at a community college. Three women participants were interviewed regarding their past and present literacy events and practices. In addition, each participant took photographs of their own literacy events for five weeks. The photographs provided additional material for further discussion during the interviews. The study was designed as a collective case study in order to explore each participant's literacy practices and compare across cases. The Effects Of An Integrated Rhythmic And Literacy Intervention On The Development Of Phonological Awareness And Rhythm Skills Of Preschoolers, Sara D. Nelson

This study explored the impact of an integrated rhythm-literacy (IRL) intervention on the development of rhythm and phonological awareness (PA) skills in preschool children ages 4-5.5 years old. The IRL intervention draws from research that examines the role rhythm may play in the development of PA and is composed of three main events. Those events include (1) integrated rhythm-literacy text interactions, (2) integrated rhythm-literacy call and response and (3) integrated rhythm-literacy movement. As public schools become more diverse in terms of student population, the US teaching force remains relatively stable. For this reason, teacher education programs need to provide and sustain social justice learning to ensure pre-service teachers enter classrooms prepared to teach all students. This article examines how pre-service teachers took up identities as social justice educators and sustained social justice learning during lapses in teacher education curricula. Analysis reveals that teacher educators can incorporate methods into course curriculum to ensure social justice learning is sustained in teacher education. This study analyzed existing student record data on the 2005 to 2014 student enrollment in noncredit English as a Second Language courses at Des Moines Area Community College, Urban Campus to identify demographic factors and course-taking patterns that predicted matriculation or nonmatriculation to community college courses. This study aims to examine the existing attitudes and practices of translanguaging, the use of the students' native language in the English language classroom, by 19 English language teachers in the state of Iowa. Considering the increased influence of digital technologies on daily life (Fallows, 2004) and young children’s increased use of interactive technologies (Children Now, 2007), early childhood educators are beginning to think about the role of technology in their classrooms. Many preschool programs are beginning to purchase iPads, or similar tablets, for classroom use. Thus, it is important to consider how iPads, or similar tablets, can be used in a developmentally appropriate manner with young children. To this end, this article describes the use of iPads in two preschool classrooms of four and five year-old children.

The Modern Language Association report and Profession issue from summer 2007 (Geisler et al., 2007) are highly indicative of the increasingly debated concerns in the profession surrounding (1) the traditional division of foreign language curriculum between “language” and “literature” and (2) the instruction of textual analysis (or practice of close reading) in the student‐centered literature classroom.
